Can AI Read Aerospace Drawings to Speed Up Quoting?

Short answer

AI can read aerospace drawings well enough to speed up quoting, extracting the title block, revision, material and process notes, tolerances and quality flags from PDFs and scans, but it makes mistakes and must be checked by an estimator. It works best on drawing notes and tables and less well on dense dimension views, GD&T frames and hand-annotated markups. A realistic use is to produce a cited requirements summary and a candidate list of similar past jobs, not an automatic price. For ITAR work, the model must run inside your own boundary. This guide explains what works today.

What AI Extracts Reliably

Vision-capable language models do well on text-heavy regions of a drawing. In practice they can pull part number, revision, material callouts such as AMS or ASTM specs, general notes, finish and special process references, and quality notes, then present them as a structured list with the location of each item. They can also read revision tables, notes about marking and packaging, and reference lists of specifications.

For tolerance blocks and general tolerances they usually capture the stated values. Accuracy rises when the PDF has real text rather than a scan, and falls for low-resolution faxed drawings and old hand-lettered sheets.

What Still Needs a Person

Do not trust unattended extraction for the following.

  • GD&T feature control frames and datum schemes, where symbols and nesting are misread
  • Dimension counts, which matter for FAI ballooning and inspection time estimates
  • Hidden implications, such as a tight position tolerance on thin walls that drives cost
  • Markups, superseded notes and sheets in a multi-sheet set that conflict
  • Whether the model is complete, since it can omit a note without warning

A Workflow That Holds Up

Ingest the RFQ package, parse each document, and have the model produce a requirements sheet with citations to page and note number. The estimator reviews it against the drawing, corrects errors, and the corrections are logged. The system then retrieves similar past jobs by material, size class, feature types and processes, shows their actual hours, costs and margins, and drafts a cost buildup for the estimator.

Over time, the corrections tell you where the model is weak. Keep a sample set of drawings with known answers and test any model or prompt change against it before using it on live bids.

Data Control for ITAR and CUI

Aerospace drawings from defense primes often carry export-controlled technical data or CUI markings. Sending them to a public AI service can create an unauthorized export or a contract violation. A private deployment runs an open-weight model on your own GPUs, with retrieval over drawings stored in your existing controlled repository, access restricted by program, and every request logged.

This does not make you compliant by itself; your Technology Control Plan, access controls and CMMC scope still apply. It lets you use AI without moving data outside the boundary you already defend.

When It Is Not Worth It

If you quote fewer than around 20 RFQs a month, or your work is mostly repeat parts already in your system, the setup effort may not pay back; a good estimator with templates is faster. If drawings are mostly old scans or your historical job data is thin, fix the data first, because the matching and costing steps depend on it. And no model should issue a quote without estimator approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI generate a quote directly from an engineering drawing?

It can produce a draft with a requirements list and a cost buildup based on similar past jobs, but it should not issue a price without an estimator review. Drawings contain subtleties, such as tight tolerances on fragile features, that models can miss and that significantly change cost.

Is it safe to upload ITAR drawings to ChatGPT or similar tools?

Generally not. Export-controlled technical data should stay within systems and persons authorized under your ITAR compliance program. Use a model that runs in your own environment, and consult your empowered official or counsel about your obligations.

How accurate is AI at reading engineering drawings?

Good on text, title blocks and notes, weaker on GD&T and dense dimensioning. Measure it on your own drawings with known answers instead of relying on general claims, and keep human review on anything affecting price or compliance.

Do I need CAD models as well as drawings?

Not required, but a 3D model helps estimate removal volume and features. Many shops use drawings for requirements and CAM software for cycle time, then combine both in the estimate.

Send Netray a few redacted or non-controlled sample drawings and see what a private model extracts, with citations, and where it needs correcting.
