Engineering Drawing Review Checklist (Before Release to Manufacturing)
A drawing review catches the mistakes that are cheap on the screen and expensive on the shop floor. This checklist covers the title block, dimensions, tolerances and GD&T, notes, and release control, so a checker can work through a drawing the same way every time.
0 of 37 items complete
15 critical items still open - these are the highest-risk gaps.
Title block and administration
Dimensions and views
Tolerances and GD&T
Notes, material and compliance
Release and revision control
Every critical item should be ticked before release. A score under 85 percent means the drawing needs another pass.
Automate release checks against your BOM
Optional: we can review how drawing revisions, BOMs and routings are kept in sync in your ERP.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the checklist
Print or work on screen with the model and drawing side by side. Tick each item as you verify it, not as you assume it. Items marked critical are those that most often cause scrap, rework or purchase order disputes, and they should block release if they fail. Export the completed list to PDF or Excel and file it with the ECN so the review is evidence, not memory.
What a good review looks at
Start with the administration, because a wrong part number or revision propagates everywhere. Then check that the part can be made and measured: datums that can be fixtured, tolerances in line with process capability, and no ambiguous or duplicate dimensions. Finally check the notes and release items. A frequent finding is a tight tolerance on a non-functional feature, or a missing tolerance on a functional one, so ask of each dimension what the part does at that location.
- Check functional dimensions first, cosmetic last
- Confirm that the mating drawing agrees on every fit
- Ask a machinist or inspector to review datum choices
Tailoring it to your company
Add items for your customer flowdowns, such as AS9100 or IATF 16949 control plan requirements, and remove those that do not apply. Aerospace and defense drawings often add export control markings, key characteristic flags and special process callouts. Keep the list short enough that people actually use it, and revise it when a drawing error escapes to production so the same mistake is caught next time.
Common mistakes
Common mistakes in review are checking only against the model and not the stated standard, accepting a general tolerance note as covering fits, skipping the where-used check so a change breaks another assembly, and releasing without updating the routing or BOM. Another is reviewing your own drawing: the checker should be a different person.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should be checked on an engineering drawing before release?
Check the title block and revision, dimension completeness and consistency with the model, functional tolerances and fits, GD&T frames and datums, material and finish notes, inspection requirements, and that the BOM and routing match the new revision.
Who should review an engineering drawing?
A checker who did not draw it, ideally with input from manufacturing and quality. A second pair of eyes catches duplicate dimensions and unmeasurable datums, and a machinist or inspector can flag features that cannot be made or verified as drawn.
How often should the checklist be updated?
Update it whenever a drawing error reaches the shop floor or a customer, and review it annually against new customer flowdowns and standards. Keeping it short and relevant matters more than making it exhaustive.
Does the checklist replace a formal design review?
No. It checks documentation quality, not design intent. A design review decides whether the design meets requirements. The drawing check confirms the drawing communicates that design clearly, completely and in a way that can be manufactured and inspected.
