Using AI to Read Plating, Anodizing and Passivation Specs From Customer POs and Drawings

Short answer

AI can read customer POs and drawing notes and pull out the finishing specification, type, class, thickness, testing and flow-down clauses, giving a contract reviewer a structured summary instead of a wall of text. Finishing callouts are compact and easy to misread: MIL-A-8625 Type II Class 2 is not Type III, ASTM B633 SC 3 is not SC 1, and AMS 2700 Method 1 differs from Method 2. A model that extracts and cites each callout, and flags ones it cannot resolve, shortens review and reduces process mistakes. This guide covers what to extract, how to validate and what to keep human.

The Callouts That Matter

Finishing callouts live in drawing notes, title blocks, PO line items and attached quality clauses, and they often conflict. A drawing may cite an obsolete revision while the PO cites a newer one. A careful reviewer collects every finishing requirement, resolves conflicts with the customer and records the result.

A model can do the collection step consistently.

  • Anodize: MIL-A-8625 type and class, dye or seal requirement, coating thickness, masking areas
  • Zinc and zinc alloy: ASTM B633 type and service condition, ASTM F1941 for fasteners, chromate or trivalent passivate
  • Electroless nickel: AMS 2404 or MIL-C-26074 class, thickness and post-plate bake
  • Passivation: AMS 2700 method and type, or ASTM A967 process choice
  • Chemical conversion coating: MIL-DTL-5541 type and class
  • Testing: salt spray per ASTM B117 hours, adhesion, thickness, hardness

Extraction With Citations

The model should output each requirement with the source page, the exact text and a confidence marker. Any value it cannot find should be shown as missing rather than guessed. Resolve conflicting revisions by listing both and routing the question to a person.

Citations let a reviewer verify a value in seconds, which is what makes the tool faster than reading the whole package.

Mapping Callouts to Your Process Library

Once extracted, a callout should map to one of your qualified process routes. If a customer asks for a type and class you are not qualified to run, or a combination you have never run, the tool should flag it before quoting. This prevents the costly case where a quote is issued for work the shop cannot do to spec, or where the wrong bath is used.

The mapping table is yours and should be maintained by your process engineer or quality manager.

Validation and Human Review

Test the extraction on a few hundred of your past POs where you know the right answer. Measure how often it gets spec, type, class and revision right, and where it fails: scanned notes, handwritten markups, tables. Keep the reviewer in the loop for every job until accuracy is demonstrated, and keep sampling afterward.

Never allow the model to release a job to the floor on its own.

Handling Controlled Drawings

Defense and aerospace drawings may be ITAR or CUI. Sending them to a public AI service can create compliance exposure for the shop. The practical answer is to run an open-weight model on your own servers and restrict access using the same controls you apply to the drawings.

Your counsel and export compliance lead decide what is acceptable for your contracts.

When It Is Not Worth It

If your POs are structured, repeat and already entered through EDI or a customer portal, there is little to extract. The value is in unstructured intake: emailed RFQs, mixed drawing formats and many one-time customers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MIL-A-8625 Type II and Type III?

Type II is sulfuric acid anodizing, commonly used for corrosion protection and decorative finishes, with dyeable coatings. Type III is hard coat anodizing, which produces a thicker, harder and more wear resistant layer. Class 1 is non-dyed and Class 2 is dyed. Always follow the revision and requirements stated on the drawing or PO.

Can AI misread a plating specification?

Yes. Models can mix up similar callouts, miss revisions or misread tables and scanned notes. That is why extraction should show citations and missing values, why a person should confirm, and why you should measure accuracy on known past jobs before relying on it.

Is it safe to upload ITAR drawings to an AI tool?

Not to a public or uncontrolled service. Export-controlled technical data should stay within systems and persons authorized under your compliance program. Many shops therefore run models on their own hardware. Confirm the details with your export compliance officer or counsel.

Send Netray a sample of POs and drawings with answers you already know, and we can show extraction accuracy on your own paperwork before you commit to anything.
