ERP for Metal Finishing and Plating Job Shops: What to Require

Short answer

ERP for a metal finishing job shop must handle customer-owned material, process routings built from specifications, rack or load tracking, test and cert records, and per-load costing, which is why a generic manufacturing ERP often feels wrong in a plating or heat treat shop. You do not build product from a bill of materials; you process parts you do not own. Your requirements are receiving, traveler generation, load planning, quality records and billing by process. This guide lists the capabilities to require, the system types shops use and the questions to ask before buying.

How Finishing Differs From a Machine Shop

In a captive finishing job shop there is usually no bill of materials, because the customer supplies the parts. The ERP object that matters is the process route per spec: a sequence such as clean, etch, zinc nickel plate, chromate, bake and inspect, with the parameters and tests attached. Work is received against a customer PO, tracked by lot, processed in loads that may combine different orders, and billed per piece, area or load.

Many general ERPs treat that as a service item with no process control, so quality and traceability land in spreadsheets.

Capabilities to Require

Write requirements against the real workflow, then test each vendor with a real job from receiving to invoice.

  • Receiving with customer part, revision, quantity, condition notes and lot identification
  • Spec library: reusable process routes by specification, type and class
  • Traveler generation with operator sign-off and tank, line or furnace assignment
  • Load or rack tracking that can combine several orders and still maintain lot traceability
  • Test record capture (thickness, hardness, salt spray, adhesion) tied to the lot
  • Certificate generation from order, process and test data
  • Pricing by piece, area, weight, load and minimum lot, with add-on charges
  • Job costing that includes chemistry, labor and outside processing

Types of Systems Shops Use

Finishing shops fall into three camps. Some run a niche finishing or heat treat package built around loads, specs and certs. Others use a general job shop ERP such as E2, JobBOSS, Global Shop Solutions or ProShop and add custom fields and templates.

Larger or multi-site operations may use NetSuite, Epicor, Infor SyteLine or similar, with a separate quality system. The trade-off is fit versus flexibility: niche packages fit the workflow but may be thin on accounting and integration, while general ERPs integrate well but need configuration to model loads and specs. Evaluate by running your three hardest jobs through a demo.

Regulatory Data You Also Have to Hold

A finishing shop also manages records that general manufacturers rarely do: bath analysis logs, wastewater discharge records under the Clean Water Act pretreatment rules for metal finishing (40 CFR 433), hazardous waste manifests, and customer restricted-substance requirements such as hexavalent chromium limits. Decide whether those live in the ERP, a safety system or a controlled spreadsheet, and make sure they can be tied to production dates when an auditor asks.

Adding AI on Top of the System You Have

You do not need to replace your ERP to ask better questions of it. A private assistant over your existing database can answer 'what did we make per rack-hour on MIL-A-8625 Type III last year' or 'which customers have the highest rework on zinc nickel', with the query shown and read-only access. That is useful when the data is clean enough to answer; if loads and test results are not recorded in structured form, fix capture first.

When to Stay on What You Have

If the current system issues travelers, tracks lots and invoices correctly, and the pain is mostly in quoting or reporting, adding tools around it is cheaper and less risky than an ERP migration. Replace the ERP when it cannot represent loads, specs or traceability at all.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best ERP for a plating shop?

There is no single best choice. Niche finishing and heat treat packages fit the workflow of loads, specs and certs, while general job shop ERPs offer broader accounting and integration. Choose by running your hardest real job end to end, including traceability and cert generation, during the demo.

Does a finishing shop need a bill of materials in ERP?

Usually not for customer-owned parts. What matters is the process routing per spec, the chemistry and consumables used, and traceability to the customer lot. Some shops do track consumables and chemistry cost per load for job costing.

Can I connect my ERP to my plating line controls?

It is possible where the line controller or rectifier exposes data, and some shops log amp-hours, tank temperature and cycle time against the load. Start with manual capture of key parameters and automate only the data that is used for cost, quality or customer reporting.
