What MEP Centers Do and Do Not Do
MEP centers are staffed by people with manufacturing backgrounds who work with shops on practical projects. Common services include lean and continuous improvement events, quality management system support for ISO 9001, AS9100 and ISO 13485 preparation, cybersecurity assessments tied to NIST SP 800-171 for companies handling CUI, supply chain and supplier scouting, workforce and training, and help evaluating technology such as ERP, automation and software. They are advisors, not auditors who certify you, and they are not a replacement for a software vendor or implementation partner.
Services and fees differ by state, and some projects are subsidized or tied to grant programs.
- Lean, scheduling and shop-floor flow improvement
- Quality system help ahead of third-party registrar audits
- Cybersecurity gap assessment for DFARS and CMMC readiness
- Supplier scouting that connects buyers with domestic shops
- Technology and ERP selection guidance
How to Find Yours and Prepare for the First Call
Search for your state name plus MEP center, or use the NIST MEP directory of centers. The first conversation is usually a scoping call or site visit. Prepare a one-page picture of the business: products and processes, number of employees, annual revenue range, key customers and certifications, current systems such as JobBOSS, E2, ProShop, SyteLine or QuickBooks with spreadsheets, and your two or three biggest pains.
Be specific about outcomes, for example reducing quote turnaround, shortening lead times, preparing for a customer audit or meeting a flow-down requirement. Vague goals produce vague projects, while a clear problem statement lets the advisor match you to the right program.
Using an MEP Center for Cybersecurity and Compliance Readiness
0 builds third-party assessment on top of that for many contracts. MEP centers commonly offer gap assessments and help drafting a system security plan and plan of action, which are required starting points. They cannot certify you or make you compliant; implementation of controls, such as multifactor authentication, logging, encryption and access control, still falls on your IT staff or provider.
Plan early, because remediation and assessment scheduling can take many months.

Getting Help Choosing ERP or Software
Owner-operators often ask an MEP advisor which ERP to buy. A good advisor will push you to document processes first: how an RFQ becomes a quote, a job, a traveler, inspection records and an invoice. They can help you build a requirements list and compare vendors on fit, cost of ownership and implementation risk.
They will not pick a product for you, and some centers have vendor relationships that you should ask about. Compare at least three options, ask for references from shops with similar work, and compare the five-year cost including implementation, training and support, not only the license.
When an MEP Center Is Not the Right Tool
MEP help works best on defined projects with a clear outcome. If you need software built or configured, such as an AI assistant over your ERP or a custom integration, you need a technical delivery partner. If you need a certification, you need a registrar.
If you need legal advice on export controls, you need counsel. Think of the MEP center as a trusted outside perspective and connector, then pair it with specialists for implementation. Ask what the service costs, what you get at the end, and how success will be measured before agreeing to a scope.
Frequently asked questions
What is an MEP center and who qualifies?
MEP centers are part of the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership network and serve small and mid-size US manufacturers through state-level organizations. Eligibility is generally for manufacturers with a US facility, and services are often cost-shared. Contact your state center to learn which programs and fees apply to you.
Can an MEP center help with CMMC or NIST 800-171?
Many centers offer cybersecurity assessments, help preparing a system security plan, and guidance on gaps. They do not certify you or implement controls for you. You still need IT work and, for CMMC levels that require it, an assessment by an authorized third party.
Will an MEP center pick an ERP for me?
No. An advisor can help document your processes, build requirements and compare vendors, but the decision and implementation stay with you. Ask about any vendor relationships the center has, request references from similar shops, and compare five-year total cost, not just license price.
