PPAP and IATF 16949 for Rubber Parts Suppliers

Short answer

A rubber parts supplier selling into automotive needs a PPAP package per part number that shows the process is capable and controlled, and that usually means a control plan, PFMEA, dimensional results, material and performance test data, and a quality system aligned with IATF 16949. Rubber adds its own challenges: flexible parts are hard to gauge, properties depend on cure, and compound lots must be traceable. This guide covers what customers expect and where small molders struggle.

What a PPAP Package Contains for Rubber Parts

The AIAG PPAP manual defines up to 18 elements, and customers specify the submission level. For rubber parts the core items are design records, an approved engineering change document, PFMEA, a process flow diagram, a control plan, dimensional results on a defined sample, material and performance test results, measurement system analysis, initial process studies, qualified lab documentation, appearance approval if applicable, sample parts and the part submission warrant. Material data typically includes durometer, tensile, elongation, compression set, fluid aging or heat aging per the customer spec.

Keep the submission aligned with the drawing revision.

Control Plans and PFMEA That Fit Rubber Processes

Rubber-specific controls should appear in the control plan: compound lot release, preform weight, mold temperature, cure time, pressure, post cure time and temperature, flash limits, bonding checks for inserts, and visual standards for defects such as blisters, knit lines and backrinding. The PFMEA should reflect real failure modes: undercure, scorch, contamination, insert misplacement, bonding failure and dimensional shrink variation. Generic templates copied from machined parts miss these and are quickly spotted by customer quality reviewers.

  • Compound lot release and expiry control
  • Preform weight and temperature and cure time monitoring
  • Bond adhesion and insert placement checks
  • Visual standard for blisters, knit lines and flash

Measurement Challenges: Gauging Soft Parts

Rubber parts deform under contact gauging, so standard calipers can give inconsistent readings and weak gauge R&R. Optical comparators, vision systems, go/no-go fixtures with defined force and non-contact measurement are common solutions. Shrinkage is also part-specific and tied to compound and cure, so dimensional capability studies should use production-intent molds and compound.

Define the measurement method on the control plan and include it in MSA. Customers will challenge a Cpk built on a method that deforms the part.

Traceability and Records That Auditors Ask For

IATF 16949 expects identification and traceability that supports containment. For rubber, you should be able to link a shipped lot to the compound batch, mix and rheometer records, press, mold, cure parameters, operator or shift, and inspection records. Retain records for the period the customer and standard require.

If this data sits in paper travelers, ERP notes and test spreadsheets, audits become scavenger hunts. Link compound lot, job and quality results in one system if possible.

When the Burden Isn't Worth It

If you sell mostly non-automotive industrial parts, full IATF 16949 certification is expensive and may not be required, and ISO 9001 plus targeted customer requirements may be enough. If an automotive customer asks for PPAP but is a small share of revenue, weigh the documentation load against margin. For those who do commit, automating record assembly saves quality staff many hours per submission.

Frequently asked questions

What is PPAP for rubber parts?

PPAP, the Production Part Approval Process, is the automotive documentation package showing a supplier's process can consistently produce parts to specification. For rubber it includes dimensional results, material and performance test data, control plan, PFMEA, measurement studies and traceability for the compound.

How do you do gauge R&R on soft rubber parts?

Use a measurement method that does not deform the part, such as optical or vision measurement or fixtures with a defined contact force, then run a gauge R&R study on that method. Contact calipers on soft parts often give poor repeatability and weak results.

Does a rubber molder need IATF 16949 certification?

Only if automotive customers require it. Many rubber suppliers serve tier 1 or tier 2 accounts that expect compliance or certification, while industrial suppliers often hold ISO 9001. Check the customer requirements and the cost before committing.
