MachineMetrics with Infor SyteLine: work orders out, labor tickets back

MachineMetrics offers a two-way SyteLine connector that brings work orders, employees and parts to the shop floor and writes labor tickets back to SyteLine. For cloud SyteLine it uses the ION API Gateway over REST and OAuth 2.0. For on-prem it reads the SQL Server database directly through a MachineMetrics edge device.

How MachineMetrics SyteLine Connector connects to Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine)

ION API Gateway (cloud SyteLine)

MachineMetrics calls SyteLine through the ION API Gateway using REST and OAuth 2.0 credentials issued from Infor OS. You create an authorized app and service account in ION API, then give MachineMetrics the client details.

Direct SQL Server access via edge device (on-prem SyteLine)

For on-prem, MachineMetrics documents a direct database connection from its edge device to the SyteLine SQL Server database. That needs network reachability and a database account with the access the connector requires, which your DBA should scope carefully.

Setting it up

  1. 1Decide cloud or on-prem pathCloud tenants use the ION API Gateway. On-prem sites use the SQL Server path through an edge device on the plant network.
  2. 2Prepare credentialsCloud: create the ION API authorized app and service account. On-prem: have the DBA create a dedicated SQL login with the minimum access MachineMetrics documents.
  3. 3Map employees and work centersMake sure SyteLine employee IDs, work centers and resources line up with machines and operators defined in MachineMetrics.
  4. 4Configure the connectorEnter the connection details in MachineMetrics, choose the site, and select which jobs are pulled, for example released jobs only.
  5. 5Test the pull firstConfirm jobs, operations, parts and employees appear correctly before enabling any write-back.
  6. 6Pilot labor ticket write-back on one cellRun one machine for a week, compare MachineMetrics labor with SyteLine job transactions, and check the results with payroll and costing.
  7. 7Roll out cell by cellTrain operators on starting and completing operations, then expand once variances are explained.

What usually breaks

  • !Employee or work center codes that differ between systems, so tickets are rejected or land on the wrong resource.
  • !Operators forgetting to close an operation, which writes inflated labor time to the job.
  • !Write-back going to jobs in a status that SyteLine does not accept transactions against.
  • !On-prem database access that is broader than needed, or breaks after a SQL password rotation.
  • !Cloud OAuth credentials that expire or are revoked, silently stopping the sync.
  • !Overlapping labor entry through another shop-floor tool, producing duplicate labor for the same operation.

A private AI layer across both systems

Machine data against job cost

A private assistant reading machine run time and SyteLine job transactions can show where actual cycle time differs from the routing, as a starting point for review.

Labor ticket exceptions

Flag tickets with unusually long durations, missing completions or rejected posts, with the job and operation, so a supervisor can fix them.

Plain-language shop questions

Ask which jobs due this week are on machines with repeated downtime and see the answer drawn from both systems, without anyone building a report.

When something else fits better

  • If you only need labor reporting, SyteLine's own shop floor transactions or Infor Factory Track may be enough without machine monitoring.
  • If you need machine data but not ERP write-back, run MachineMetrics read-only and keep labor entry where it is.
  • Other MES or monitoring products with SyteLine connectors exist; compare by write-back behaviour and your on-prem or cloud needs.

Frequently asked questions

How does MachineMetrics connect to on-prem SyteLine?

MachineMetrics documents a direct SQL Server database connection through its edge device for on-prem SyteLine. Plan the network path and a scoped database account with your DBA, and test in a non-production database first.

How does it connect to cloud SyteLine?

Through the ION API Gateway using REST and OAuth 2.0. You create the authorized app and service account in Infor OS and provide the credentials to MachineMetrics.

What gets written back to SyteLine?

MachineMetrics describes the connector as two-way, writing labor tickets back to SyteLine. Confirm in a test environment exactly which transactions post and how they affect job cost before going live.

Where can AI add value here?

Mostly in reconciliation and exception review across machine data and SyteLine jobs, drafted for a supervisor to approve. We would not let an AI post labor to production without human review.
