Use your drawing coating note and customer workmanship standard for pass/fail limits. The check list shows common points only. Record the thickness method (wet film gauge, dry film eddy current or witness coupon).

Digitize coating inspection

Optional review of how coating inspection results could flow into your ERP work order.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use this record

Fill in the header fields for the assembly, work order and coating material, then complete the inspection points table by hand or in the exported Word or Excel file. Export a PDF for the build record. Create one record per lot or per serial number depending on your customer's traceability rule. Keep the coating material lot and expiry on the record because a material problem found later must be traceable to the assemblies it touched.

Where the criteria come from

Most defense primes call out IPC-CC-830 for coating qualification and IPC-A-610 for workmanship acceptance, plus the drawing's coating note. The coating note sets the chemistry, keep-out areas and thickness range. Thickness is checked on the board surface or on a witness coupon processed with the lot. Parylene is measured differently from liquid coatings, so state the method on the record.

  • Drawing coating note and thickness range
  • Customer workmanship or source inspection requirements
  • IPC-A-610 coating section for visual acceptance
  • Material data sheet for cure time and temperature

Common mistakes

The most common escape is coating over a keep-out area, such as a connector contact or a thermal pad, because masking was missed. Next is inspecting only under white light when the drawing calls for UV tracer inspection. Others include recording a single thickness reading instead of a range, forgetting to record material expiry, and releasing an assembly before the cure schedule has finished. A signature line for the inspector and the operator keeps accountability clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness should conformal coating be?

It depends on chemistry and the drawing. Many specifications give 0.03 to 0.13 mm for acrylic, urethane and epoxy, and a thinner range for parylene. Always follow your drawing note or customer specification, not a generic number.

Do I need a record for every board?

Not always. Many programs record per lot with a sample of thickness readings, while others require per serial number. Check your quality plan and customer flow-down before deciding.

How do I check coverage?

Most shops use a UV tracer in the coating and inspect under a black light, then confirm visual criteria under magnification. Record the method on the form so the result can be reproduced.

Can I reuse this for parylene?

Yes, change the coating chemistry field and thickness method. Parylene is vapor deposited, so also record the chamber run number and witness coupon results.

If your coating results live in a traveler, MES or ERP, Netray can help route inspection results into the work order record automatically.
