Cost of CMMC Level 2 Third-Party Certification Calculator
This calculator estimates the cost of CMMC Level 2 third-party certification for a small manufacturer: the C3PAO assessment, readiness consulting, one-time remediation and the yearly cost of staying compliant. Change the numbers to match your quotes.

Your results
Planning estimate using your own inputs. Assessor pricing, scope and remediation needs vary widely, so replace defaults with quotes. Level 3 is a separate, government-led assessment by DIBCAC that requires Level 2 first and a subset of NIST SP 800-172 requirements, so no commercial fee is modeled here.

What drives the cost
The assessment fee is assessors times days times rate, and days grow with the number of locations, systems and users in scope. Remediation is usually larger than the fee itself. The biggest saving is a small, well defined CUI enclave rather than the whole company network. Recurring costs matter because Level 2 requires annual affirmation and continuous operation of controls such as logging, MFA and patching, not a one-time project.
- Scope: fewer CUI users, fewer systems, one location
- Existing maturity: MFA, endpoint and logging already in place
- Cloud choice: a compliant cloud tenant can shift cost from capex to subscription
- Documentation: system security plan and policies drafted in-house or bought
Reading the results
Year 1 total includes the assessment, readiness help, remediation and the first year of tools and effort. The recurring figure is what you pay every year after. The chart shows how both grow as more users touch CUI, which usually means adding licenses, monitoring volume and assessor time. Try the default of 25 users versus 10: the difference shows why restricting CUI to a small group pays off.
Level 2 versus Level 3 cost context
Most contractors handling CUI need Level 2, either self assessed or certified by an authorized third-party assessor depending on the contract. Level 3 applies to a smaller set of programs, is assessed by the government rather than a commercial C3PAO, and adds requirements from NIST SP 800-172 on top of a Level 2 final status. Cost for Level 3 depends mainly on the added controls such as stronger segmentation and threat hunting, not on an assessment fee you can quote in advance.
Common budgeting mistakes
Companies budget the assessment but not the controls, forget the external service providers who also need to meet requirements, and ignore annual upkeep. Another mistake is paying for a pre-assessment without first fixing scoping. Ask any quote to state days, number of assessors, travel and whether re-assessment of failed practices is included.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does CMMC Level 2 certification cost?
There is no single price. The assessment is often a modest part of the total; remediation, tools and staff time usually dominate. Use quotes from several assessors and consultants, and enter them in the calculator for your own scope.
Do I pay the assessor every year?
No. A Level 2 certification assessment is valid for three years, with annual affirmations of continued compliance in between. Your recurring cost is tooling, monitoring and internal effort rather than a yearly assessment fee.
How much does CMMC Level 3 cost?
Level 3 is assessed by the government (DIBCAC) and builds on a Level 2 final status with selected NIST SP 800-172 requirements, so the main cost is implementing those controls. It applies to a limited set of high priority programs.
How can a small shop cut CMMC cost?
Limit CUI to a small enclave, use a compliant managed cloud instead of building infrastructure, reuse existing MFA and endpoint tools, and write documentation from your real practice. Fewer in-scope users and systems lower every line.
Keeping an AI assistant inside your CUI enclave avoids adding an external cloud to your scope. Netray can discuss on-prem designs that stay inside your boundary.
