ERP Cost of Ownership Model

Infor LN pricing and 5-year cost of ownership model

Infor does not publish Infor LN prices, so this model takes the numbers from your own order form, subscription quote or maintenance renewal. Enter users, your LN multi-tenant cloud subscription or on-premises license and maintenance, the database and servers an LN 10.x install needs, and an implementation scope built from LN packages such as Sales, Procurement, Planning, Manufacturing, Warehousing, Service and Financials. It also fits Baan IV and Baan 5 sites pricing a move to LN: the year-by-year table puts staying on-premises and moving to the cloud side by side.

Users by type

How many people and connections you license, by the user types that matter in Infor LN.

People who work in LN sessions most of the day (LN UI or desktop client): order entry, planning, shop floor, warehousing, finance.

Approvers, inquiry-only and mobile users. Check with Infor whether your contract prices these differently from full users; LN license types in SLM are user counts, not roles.

System accounts used by Infor OS (ION), EDI, MES, WMS or custom interfaces. Ask Infor how these accounts count against your license.

Starting counts are a sample company size so the effort model shows hours straight away. Replace them with yours.

What to check in a Infor LN quote

  • License type: SLM supports Concurrent User and Named User licenses, and Infor restricts which types apply to each product. Concurrent counts peak sessions, named counts people, so measure peak logins before you negotiate a concurrent quote.
  • Named users on several desktops: each extra desktop a named user runs LN from reduces the license count by one. Check how many users really work from two machines.
  • Add-ons: in the LN cloud, Factory Track, WMS, MES, CPQ, EDI Exchange, LN Mobile Service and similar products are listed as add-ons. Price each one you scope as its own line.
  • Database: self-managed LN 10.x needs a database license (SQL Server, Oracle or DB2). If your database contract is priced per processor or core, the server size drives this line as much as the user count.
  • Baan IV and Baan 5 moves: Enterprise Modeler models convert to LN, but Infor documents that modeling sessions, subsessions and authorizations need manual adjustment afterwards. Count that as customization or Enterprise Modeler hours.
  • Customizations: every customized session, report and 4GL script in Baan or LN on-premises is a line item. Ask your partner how each one is delivered in the multi-tenant cloud and price rework as customization hours.
  • Multi-site and multi-company: LN separates logistic and financial companies, and each extra site or company adds setup, testing and data migration hours.

Infor LN licensing explained

In words, from vendor documentation. Follow the source links before you rely on a point in a negotiation.

Infor Solution License Manager (SLM)

On-premises LN is licensed through SLM, which Infor describes as the central license manager for its products. When an application requests a license, the SLM server checks the license file and, depending on the license type, the named user, server or desktop. A new LN installation starts with a 30-day demo license and must then be licensed.

Source
SLM license types

SLM defines user-locking licenses (Concurrent User: a pool of concurrent users; Named User: a pool of specific named users), node-locking licenses (Server and Desktop: specific named computers) and Instance licenses (specific named instances). Infor documents that, depending on its pricing strategy, only a restricted set of license types can be assigned to an application, so your contract decides which applies.

Source
Named User licenses

SLM rejects a license request when it does not know the user name. A named user can be allowed to run the application from several desktops at once, and each additional desktop reduces the license count by one. Infor validates only the number of named users, not the names.

Source
Product IDs per license type

Each LN product is registered in SLM by product ID for its license type. Infor publishes the table of license types and product IDs per product group (including Infor LN) on the Infor Customer Portal, in the SLM license key request area. Use it to check what your order form actually covers.

Source
LN multi-tenant cloud subscription

Infor documents the LN CloudSuite as multi-tenant and provided by subscription. Core applications listed include LN, LN Analytics, Localization Services, Process Intelligence, the Analytics Platform and Infor OS; Factory Track, WMS, MES, CPQ, EDI Exchange, LN Mobile Service and others are listed as cloud add-ons, so price each add-on you scope.

How to use the Infor LN cost model

  1. 1

Count users and check your license type

Split users into full LN users, occasional users and integration connections. On-premises, check which SLM license type (Concurrent User or Named User) your LN product IDs use before you count: concurrent means peak sessions, named means people.

  2. 2

    Enter the quotes you have

Type the LN cloud subscription per user per month, and the perpetual license and annual maintenance percent if you are pricing or keeping LN or Baan on-premises. Leave a deployment empty if you have no quote for it.

  3. 3

    Add infrastructure for self-managed options

For on-premises or private cloud, pick the database (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle or DB2) and enter servers, database licenses, hosting and backup costs from your own invoices or provider quotes.

  4. 4

    Scope the implementation or migration

Pick the LN packages in scope and set sites, integrations, customizations and data migration objects. For a Baan IV or Baan 5 move, count every customized session and script as a customization. Adjust hours per unit and the blended rate to your partner's estimate.

  5. 5

Read the drivers and test the range

Use the sensitivity sliders to see how much the 5-year total moves with license, effort and rate, then export the model or save it to your account.

Infor LN pricing and licensing questions

How much does Infor LN cost?

Infor does not publish LN list prices. The price depends on the license type in your contract (Concurrent User or Named User on-premises), user counts, the add-ons you buy, deployment (multi-tenant cloud subscription or on-premises license plus maintenance) and your negotiation. This model does not guess a price: enter the figures from your quote and it builds the 5-year total around them.

What license types does Infor LN use?

On-premises LN is licensed through the Infor Solution License Manager (SLM). SLM defines Concurrent User and Named User licenses (user-locking), Server and Desktop licenses (node-locking) and Instance licenses. Infor states that, depending on its pricing strategy, only a restricted set of license types can be assigned to each application, so the type you have is set by your contract and product IDs.

What is the difference between concurrent and named LN users?

With a Concurrent User license, a pool of concurrent users can use LN, so you license peak sessions. With a Named User license, a pool of specific named users can use LN: SLM rejects a request from a user name it does not know, and a named user allowed on several desktops at once uses one license per extra desktop.

Is Infor LN available in the cloud?

Yes. Infor describes LN as a multi-tenant cloud solution on AWS, and its LN CloudSuite documentation states the multi-tenant CloudSuite is provided by subscription, with core applications such as LN, LN Analytics and Infor OS and a list of add-ons. On-premises LN 10.8 documentation is still published; confirm with Infor whether new on-premises licenses are sold for your case.

Which databases does on-premises Infor LN support?

The LN 10.8 installation guide has database settings sections for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and DB2 universal database. Check Infor's platform support matrix for the versions supported by your LN and Enterprise Server release, and price the database from your own Microsoft, Oracle or IBM contract.

How do I budget a move from Baan IV or Baan 5 to Infor LN?

Model it as an implementation: LN packages in scope, sites and companies, integrations, data migration objects and every customization you keep. Infor documents a conversion path for Enterprise Modeler models from Baan IV and Baan 5, with manual adjustment of modeling sessions and authorizations afterwards. Check the current support status of your Baan release with Infor, and enter your current maintenance cost so the model shows the cost of staying.

What is included in LN total cost of ownership beyond licenses?

Implementation (configuration, data migration, integrations, testing, training, project management), add-ons such as WMS, MES or Factory Track, servers and database licenses for self-managed installs, internal staff for LN administration and development, outside application support (AMS), and upgrades. For large multi-site LN programs these lines can exceed the license cost, so the model shows each separately.

How accurate is this model?

The arithmetic is exact for the numbers you enter. The default effort hours are planning assumptions, not benchmarks, so replace them with your partner's estimate when you have one. Ask an engineer to review the result if you are using it for a budget or a cloud versus on-premises decision.
