ISO Country and Currency Codes Reference for ERP Master Data

Country and currency codes look trivial until a vendor load fails because someone typed UK instead of GB, or a Japanese yen amount is stored with two decimals. This reference lists the ISO 3166-1 country codes with the usual ISO 4217 currency and its minor units, ready to search and export.

Reference only: these are the common ISO 3166-1 and ISO 4217 pairings. Always confirm against the current ISO maintenance agency lists before loading, since currencies and codes change. Numeric codes are text so the leading zero is kept (Brazil 076, Australia 036). Many ERPs also need a separate tax jurisdiction or region code that is not part of ISO 3166-1.

Optional: send us an export and we will return a list of non-ISO values with suggested fixes.

How to use the reference

Type a country name, code or currency into the search box to filter the table. Use the alpha-2 column for most ERP country fields, the alpha-3 column for trade and customs documents that need three letters, and the numeric column for banking and some EDI interfaces. Export the table to Excel to use as a lookup list in a data load template, or as the validation list behind a drop-down in a vendor request form. The minor units column tells you how many decimal places a currency normally uses.

The standards behind the codes

ISO 3166-1 defines three codes per country: a two-letter alpha-2, a three-letter alpha-3 and a three-digit numeric code. ISO 4217 defines the three-letter currency codes, a numeric code and the number of minor units, meaning the decimal digits in common use. The first two letters of most currency codes are the country's alpha-2 code and the third is the currency initial, which is why USD and CAD look familiar, but the euro, EUR, is shared by many countries.

  • The United Kingdom is GB, not UK, in ISO 3166-1
  • JPY, KRW and VND use zero minor units
  • Euro countries all share the EUR currency code
  • Numeric codes keep leading zeros, so store them as text

Where master data goes wrong

Free-text country fields are a leading source of dirty vendor and customer data: USA, U.S.A., United States and US all appear in the same table. Fix this by storing the ISO code and displaying the name. Currency issues are subtler. If a zero-decimal currency such as JPY is stored in a field with two decimals, interface files can multiply or truncate amounts by 100. Check that rounding rules and decimal places in the ERP currency table match ISO 4217 minor units.

Common mistakes

Do not treat country and currency as one-to-one: Germany and France both use EUR, and some countries have more than one active currency in practice. Do not use the country code as the tax jurisdiction in ERPs that need state, province or GST state codes. Do not hand-type codes; validate against a controlled list. And do not assume a code never changes, since new currencies appear and old ones are withdrawn, so refresh your list from the ISO maintenance agencies at least annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the United Kingdom GB and not UK?

ISO 3166-1 assigns GB as the alpha-2 code for the United Kingdom. UK is reserved exceptionally and is not the official ISO code, though it is common in everyday use. ERP country tables should use GB.

What are minor units in ISO 4217?

Minor units are the number of decimal digits normally used for a currency. USD and EUR use 2, JPY and KRW use 0. The value tells you how to round and how to store amounts in interfaces.

Which code should my ERP store?

Most ERPs store the alpha-2 country code and the alpha-3 currency code. Check what each interface expects: customs documents often use alpha-3, banking messages often use numeric, and EDI partners usually specify their own.

Does this list include every country?

No. It lists commonly used manufacturing and trade countries. ISO 3166-1 has well over two hundred entries, so use the official ISO list for a complete load and treat this table as a quick lookup.

If your vendor and customer masters carry inconsistent country or currency values, we can profile them against an ISO list and propose corrections for your review.
