Africa and Middle East Currency Codes, Decimals and Pegs for ERP Setup

Currency setup mistakes are small and expensive: a three-decimal dinar rounded to two decimals, or a CFA franc posted with cents. This reference gives you the ISO code, minor unit digits and regime for the common African and Gulf currencies.

How to use it

Search by code, country or currency name, and check the minor unit digits before you create the currency record in your ERP. The decimals matter for rounding of amounts, for bank files and for e-invoicing standards that expect an exact number of decimal places. Export the list to Excel or CSV to use as a checklist for your currency table.

  • Set the rounding rule at the currency level.
  • Add only the currencies you transact in.
  • Keep a note of the rate source for each.

Why decimals differ

ISO 4217 gives each currency a minor unit exponent. Most currencies use two. The Kuwaiti, Bahraini, Omani and Jordanian dinars, plus the Tunisian and Libyan dinars, use three, so one thousandth is a valid unit. The Ugandan shilling, Rwandan franc and the two CFA francs use none. ERPs that hard-code two decimals produce rounding differences on invoices and payment files for these currencies.

Pegs and rate sources

Pegged currencies such as the dirham and riyal move little against the dollar, which makes revaluation simple, but the rand-linked loti, lilangeni and Namibian dollar follow the rand. For floating currencies, define the source: central bank, a commercial bank feed or a data provider. Some markets have used more than one official rate over time, so document the choice and the date it applies from.

ERP setup notes

Set the base currency first, then the reporting and transaction currencies, then rate types such as spot, average and budget. Load history if you are migrating open items. Test an invoice, a payment and a revaluation in each currency with unusual decimals before go-live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Kuwaiti dinar have three decimals?

ISO 4217 lists three minor unit digits for the dinars of Kuwait, Bahrain, Tunisia, Libya and Jordan, plus the Omani rial, because the minor unit is one thousandth. Your ERP must support that precision or amounts will round wrongly.

Are the CFA francs the same?

No. XOF serves the West African states and XAF the Central African states. They share a fixed euro peg but are separate currencies with separate central banks, so keep them as distinct currency records.

Does this list cover all African currencies?

It covers the commonly used ones for manufacturing trade, not every currency. Add others from ISO 4217 following the same approach, and verify the minor unit digits before use.

Should I trust the regime column?

Treat it as orientation. Exchange rate regimes change, so confirm with your bank or the central bank when setting the rate source in your ERP.

If you are consolidating several African subsidiaries into one ERP, we can help review currency, tax and rate configuration. Ask for a short review.
