Month End Flash Report Template
A flash report gets the headline numbers to management in the first days after period end, before the full close package is ready. This template keeps it to one page: results, position, drivers and risks.

Open items and risks
Inventory count adjustment pending for the raw material store. Two supplier invoices not yet accrued.
Review
A flash report is preliminary until the books are closed. Label it so, and restate in the final package if numbers change. Enter amounts in a single currency and state it in the company line.
Automate your flash report
Optional: we can outline how to pull each flash line from your ERP automatically.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the flash template
Fill in revenue, gross margin and EBITDA against budget and prior year, then the position items: orders, backlog, cash and inventory. Choose the status so no reader mistakes preliminary numbers for final. Write the drivers in plain words and name any open items that could change the result, such as unposted accruals or pending inventory adjustments. Export to PDF for email or to Word if the CFO wants to add comments before sending.
What belongs on a flash report
Keep it to the five or six numbers executives ask for on day two: revenue, margin, operating profit or EBITDA, orders and backlog, cash and inventory. Add a short variance explanation, not a full variance analysis. Leave detailed cost center reports and account reconciliations for the close package. In a manufacturer, shipments and backlog usually matter more than the income statement alone, so include them if the ERP can produce them quickly.
Getting the numbers fast from the ERP
Agree in advance which ERP reports feed each line: a trial balance for revenue and margin, an open order report for backlog, a cash report from the bank module and an inventory valuation for stock. Pre-built queries save hours on the first working day. Freeze the sources in the KPI definition so the flash and the final package use the same logic, and note any manual adjustments so they can be reconciled later.
Common mistakes
Sending a flash that looks final when accruals are still open, mixing currencies, or using a different margin definition than the full report. Another mistake is explaining every variance, which buries the two that matter. When the final close changes the figures, send a short restatement with the reason, rather than quietly replacing the file.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a flash report in finance?
It is a short, early summary of period results, usually one page, sent before the full close is complete. It gives leadership the headline numbers and the main reasons for variance.
How soon after month end should it go out?
Many finance teams aim for working day two or three, depending on their close process. The right timing is whenever the key accounts are reliable enough to state the result with clear caveats.
Should a flash report include a balance sheet?
Usually only the items management watches daily: cash, inventory, and sometimes receivables. A full balance sheet belongs in the close package after reconciliations are done.
How is it different from the close checklist?
The close checklist is the internal list of tasks to finish the books. The flash report is the outward summary of the result. Use the checklist to control the close and the flash to communicate it.
If your flash numbers are rebuilt by hand every month, Netray can help connect the underlying ERP reports so a draft flash is ready the morning after period end.
