What went well

Two late customer orders recovered through a Saturday shift. No recordable incidents.

Issues and root causes

OEE below target because of an unplanned spindle failure on cell 4. Inventory days up due to a raw material buy ahead of a price increase.

Actions for next month

Complete spindle PM review by 10 Oct. Release excess bar stock to the MRP exception review.

Mark the Status column Green, Amber or Red by hand after export, using thresholds your plant has agreed. Pull the actuals from the same ERP reports every month so trends stay comparable.

Automate this dashboard from your ERP

Optional: we can review which of these KPIs can be pulled directly from your ERP tables and outline how.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the dashboard template

Enter the plant, the period and the target and actual for each KPI, then write short commentary under the three headings. Export to PDF for the monthly operations review or to Word if you want to paste a trend chart. Keep targets fixed for the fiscal year so month to month comparison means something. If a KPI is not tracked at your site, delete the row after export rather than leaving a blank, a missing metric is better than a made-up one.

  • Use the same definition every month, see the KPI definition template
  • Keep commentary to cause and action, not a restatement of the number
  • Date every action and name one owner

Which KPIs belong on a plant page

Aim for five to eight measures that cover delivery, quality, flow, inventory, cost and safety. Delivery is on-time delivery to the customer commit date. Quality is first pass yield or scrap. Flow is OEE or schedule adherence. Inventory is days inventory outstanding. Cost is purchase price variance or labor efficiency. Safety is recordable incidents. More than eight dilutes attention. Anything else belongs on a department page that rolls up into this one.

Where the numbers come from in your ERP

On-time delivery comes from shipment lines against promise or request date, first pass yield from inspection or MES counts, scrap from production reporting, DIO from inventory valuation and cost of goods sold, and PPV from purchase receipt versus standard cost. Every ERP stores these slightly differently, so fix the source report for each KPI and write it into the definition. The biggest reporting arguments come from two people pulling the same KPI from different tables.

Common mistakes

Teams change a definition mid year and lose the trend, average percentages instead of recomputing from totals, or report OEE without stating whether planned downtime is excluded. Another frequent error is showing a green status because the target was loosened. Review targets once a year, in writing, and note the reason on the first dashboard that uses the new number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many KPIs should a manufacturing dashboard have?

Five to eight for the plant page is a practical limit. Cover delivery, quality, flow, inventory, cost and safety, then push detail to department pages. When everything is on the page, nothing gets a decision at the review meeting.

Can I use this as an Excel dashboard?

Yes. Export to Excel and add charts or conditional formatting for the status column. Keep one tab per month so you can build a trend line. The PDF export is better for circulating the signed monthly version.

Should targets be the same for every plant?

Not necessarily. Product mix, automation and customer requirements differ. Use common definitions across plants so numbers can be compared, but set targets per plant and review them annually.

Which ERP does this work with?

Any. It is a document template, so you type in the numbers from SAP, Oracle, Infor, Epicor, NetSuite, Dynamics or a spreadsheet. The template does not connect to your system.

If these KPIs are rebuilt in a spreadsheet every month, Netray can help wire them straight from your ERP so the dashboard refreshes itself, read-only and on your own infrastructure if needed.
