New Product Introduction Forecast Template

Items with no history cannot be forecast by a statistical model, yet they often carry the most supply risk. This template makes the launch assumptions explicit: the analog item, the ramp, a low, base and high range, and the events that would change the plan.

Review the forecast against actual orders every month for the first six months and replace the assumed ramp with real history as soon as it exists.

Analog item lookup from your ERP

Ask for an optional review of how to pull analog item history from your ERP automatically.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use it

Fill the header, choose the forecast basis and describe the ramp. Download the document and complete the monthly table with low, base and high volumes. Share it with sales, the product owner and finance before the demand review, so the number is agreed once instead of argued in every meeting. When actual orders arrive, compare them to the base column monthly.

Picking analog items

An analog is an existing item that behaved like the new one will. Match on customer segment, price point, channel and lifecycle, not just on product family. Use the analog's first twelve months, indexed to its steady state, as the ramp shape, then scale to the expected steady state volume. If there is no good analog, say so and rely on customer commitments or market sizing, with a wider range.

  • Same customer segment and channel
  • Similar price tier
  • Comparable launch support
  • Use first 12 months indexed to steady state

Ranges, not a single number

A single figure for a new item is almost always wrong. A low, base and high range lets supply plan flexible capacity for the base and hold materials only for the range it can recover. Tie the high case to a trigger, for example a signed customer qualification, so safety stock is built only when the evidence appears.

Common mistakes

Planners often forecast the launch spike and forget the cannibalization of the old item. Others keep the launch assumptions after real orders show a different shape. Another common error is loading the full steady state volume from month one. Track actual versus assumed ramp and correct early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you forecast a product with no sales history?

Use an analog item, customer commitments or market sizing, or a blend. Express the result as low, base and high volumes with a ramp, and replace the assumptions with actual orders as soon as they exist.

What is a ramp curve?

A ramp curve shows demand as a percentage of steady state for each month after launch. It is usually taken from the first year of a comparable item and scaled to the volume you expect at maturity.

Should new item forecasts be locked?

Keep the document under version control and review monthly. Lock the numbers inside the supply frozen window, but allow the assumptions to be revised each cycle as real orders arrive.

Who owns the new product forecast?

The product owner or sales owns the assumptions, the demand planner owns the numbers in the plan and finance reviews the revenue effect. The template records all three so ownership is clear.

Netray can pull analog item history from your ERP and draft the ramp curve and range for a planner to review, with the sources shown.
