Pallet Sizes and Dimensions Reference by Region

Pallet size is one of the first questions in any warehouse, rack, trailer or container plan, and the answer changes by region. This lookup lists the common footprints in both millimetres and inches so you can check a supplier spec or a customer requirement in seconds.

Footprints are nominal. Real pallets vary by a few millimetres, and load height, weight rating and entry type (two-way or four-way) are set by the specific pallet spec. Confirm with your pallet supplier and racking vendor before committing to a footprint.

Pallet master data review

Want pallet type and dimensions maintained cleanly in your ERP or WMS item master? We can review how it is stored and used.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the table

Type a region, a footprint such as 1200 or a use case into the search box and the table filters instantly. Use the metric column for export documents and the inch column for US racking and trailer calculations. Export to Excel to attach the relevant rows to a customer packaging requirement or a supplier agreement.

  • Search by footprint to see every pallet that shares it
  • Filter by region to compare what a customer in Europe expects versus North America
  • Export the rows you need to PDF for a packaging spec

Why regions use different pallets

Pallet sizes grew up around local trailers, rail cars, doorway widths and product packaging modules. North American pallets are built around a 48 inch by 40 inch grocery standard, European pallets around a 1200 by 800 millimetre footprint that matches the 600 by 400 millimetre packaging module. ISO 6780 lists six pallet footprints as an international reference, but real trade still uses local standards. Check the receiving end before choosing a pallet for export.

What to check beyond the footprint

The footprint is only the start. Rated static, dynamic and racked load, deck board spacing, entry type, material (wood, plastic, metal) and wood treatment all matter. International wood pallets generally need ISPM 15 treatment and marking for export. Racking beams, conveyor widths and AS/RS handling all assume a specific pallet quality, so ask for the supplier data sheet and not just the nominal size.

Common mistakes

The most frequent mistake is mixing 1200 by 800 and 1200 by 1000 pallets in the same rack bay, which wastes space or overhangs the beam. Another is assuming a 48 by 40 pallet and a 1200 by 1000 pallet are interchangeable because they look close; they differ by about 19 millimetres on one side and 16 on the other, enough to fail a rack clearance or a container fit plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common pallet size in the US?

The GMA pallet, 48 inches by 40 inches (about 1219 by 1016 millimetres), is the most common in North America. It was built around the grocery industry and is the default assumption for most US racking and trailers.

Is a EUR pallet the same as an EPAL pallet?

EPAL is the association that licenses and audits the standard EUR pallet. An EPAL 1 and a EUR 1 pallet share the 1200 by 800 millimetre footprint. Look for the EPAL or EUR branding to confirm it is the exchange pallet.

Which pallet sizes does ISO list?

ISO 6780 lists six footprints: 1200 by 800, 1200 by 1000, 1219 by 1016, 1140 by 1140, 1100 by 1100 and 1067 by 1067 millimetres. Many other local sizes are still used in trade.

Do I need ISPM 15 stamped pallets?

For most international shipments in solid wood packaging, yes. ISPM 15 requires heat treatment or fumigation and a stamp. Plastic and engineered wood pallets are generally exempt, but check the import rules of the destination country.

If your WMS or ERP stores a pallet type per item or per customer but you still rebuild pallet plans by hand, we can help connect that master data to your load and slotting logic.
