Define QM Procurement Key Error in SAP: What It Means and the Fix
define qm procurement key error in sap
Also searched as
- sap qm procurement key
- omj7 qm procurement key
- sap qm control key material master
Short answer
The QM procurement key error appears when a material or plant is set up for QM in procurement but the required key has not been defined or assigned. Define the key in customizing (transaction OMJ7, under QM in Procurement), then assign it in the material master QM view (MM02) alongside the QM control key and inspection setup.
Applies to: SAP ECC 6.0 and S/4HANA QM in procurement; screen labels and messages vary slightly by release
Fix the error
- 1Note the exact message and which transaction raised it: purchase order, goods receipt or material master save.
- 2Open customizing (SPRO, Quality Management, QM in Logistics, QM in Procurement) and run Define QM Procurement Key (OMJ7).
- 3Create the key with a clear name and set whether QM procurement is active, and what the key checks, such as vendor release.
- 4Define or check the QM control key (also in QM in Procurement customizing), which defines the QM requirements applied to the material.
- 5Open the material in MM02, go to the Quality Management view for the plant, and enter the procurement key and control key.
- 6Activate QM procurement for the plant and add the inspection type for goods receipt in the same view if you need inspection lots.
- 7Transport the customizing, retest the document that raised the error and confirm an inspection lot is created at goods receipt.
What the procurement key controls
QM in procurement links purchasing to quality: vendor release, quality assurance agreements, source release and inspection at goods receipt. The procurement key states, per material and plant, whether QM is active in procurement and which checks apply.
If the material master says QM is active but the key it refers to does not exist or is not valid for the plant, SAP stops the process with an error, since it cannot decide which checks to apply.
Procurement key and QM control key
These two work together. The procurement key governs whether QM runs in procurement and with what strictness. The QM control key defines the details of the requirement, such as whether a vendor needs a release or a certificate before delivery is accepted.
Define them in that order, then assign both in the material QM view. If you create only one, the other stays blank and the same error or a related one can appear in purchasing or goods receipt.
Checks if the error persists
Verify QM is active for the plant in customizing, that the key is in the right client and was transported, and that any source list or quality info record the control key requires exists. Check the material was changed in the correct plant, not only at the client level.
If the error arises only on some materials, compare their QM views with a working material. Mass-change the setup with a controlled upload rather than editing each one by hand.

Common pitfalls
- !Editing the material but not defining the key in the target client.
- !Defining the key without activating QM for the plant.
- !Assigning the procurement key while leaving the control key blank.
- !Changing customizing in production instead of through transports.
- !Not re-testing a full purchase order to goods receipt cycle.
How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this
A private AI layer can compare material master QM views across plants and tell you which materials use a procurement key that does not exist, or which differ from a working example. It reads and explains. Fixes go through your customizing and transport process.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the QM procurement key defined?
In customizing under Quality Management, QM in Logistics, QM in Procurement, with transaction OMJ7. After defining it you assign it to the material in the Quality Management view for the plant.
What is the QM control key?
It defines the QM requirements for a material in procurement, such as vendor release or certificate needs. It sits alongside the procurement key and both are entered in the material master QM view.
Why does the error appear on a purchase order?
Purchasing checks the material's QM data. If QM procurement is active but the key it points to is not defined or valid for the plant, the order cannot be processed until the setup is corrected.
Do I need a transport request?
Yes. Define the key in the development client and transport it. Material master changes are data, so they must be made in each client and plant where the material is used.

SAP QM: Inspection Lot Not Created at Goods Receipt
An inspection lot is created only when QM is active for the plant, the material has an active inspection type for the goods movement, and the material carries a QM control key. Check the Quality Management view in MM02, confirm inspection type 01 (purchase order) or 04 (production order) is active, then check QM activation in the plant and the goods movement used.
AdvancedSAP QM Integration With EWM and WM: Steps and Configuration
With WM, the goods receipt creates an inspection lot in QM and posts stock to quality inspection; the usage decision then triggers stock postings that the warehouse moves with transfer orders. With EWM, inspections are driven by inspection rules and the Quality Inspection Engine (QIE), tied to inbound delivery documents, and the result updates stock types and putaway.
How-toHow to Create a MIC (Master Inspection Characteristic) in SAP QM
A MIC is a reusable inspection characteristic in SAP QM, created in QS21 with a plant, a name and a version, then defined as quantitative (measured values with limits) or qualitative (codes from a catalog). Inspection plans (QP01) pick MICs so tolerances are maintained once. MIC data is in table QPMK, with text in QPMT.
Error fixSAP M7 021: Deficit of SL Stock Quantity
M7 021 fires during a goods issue, delivery, or confirmation when SAP checks the unrestricted-use (SL) stock for the exact plant, storage location and batch combination and finds less than what you are trying to post out. Fix the entry (batch, storage location, quantity) first; only enable negative stock or downgrade the message to a warning if the business genuinely needs to post ahead of a receipt.
Error fixSAP IDoc Status 51: Application Document Not Posted
Status 51 tells you the IDoc reached the application layer and failed to post, but the status text itself is not the error - the real cause sits in the status record's long text or the linked application log. Fix the underlying data or configuration, then reprocess the IDoc through BD87 rather than editing the status.
Error fixSAP Short Dump TIME_OUT: Maximum Runtime Exceeded
A TIME_OUT runtime error means a dialog (or RFC) work process ran longer than the maximum allowed runtime, controlled by profile parameter rdisp/max_wprun_time (600 seconds by default). The fix is almost always to move the long-running work to background processing or tune the underlying program, not to raise the timeout.
