JobBOSS2 Work Centers, Work Resources and Scheduling Setup

Question
jobboss work resources

Short answer

Scheduling in JobBOSS2 only works as well as your work center and resource setup: each work center needs a realistic capacity, a calendar of working hours, and rates, and each routing operation must point at the right center and carry honest setup and run times. Set those up first, then schedule from the job and board views. Favorites are a navigation convenience for the screens you open daily.

Applies to: JobBOSS2; the same concepts apply to JobBOSS and E2. Menu labels vary by build, so use the names as a guide.

How to set up work centers and scheduling

  1. 1List your real constraints: machines, cells or departments where work queues. Group identical machines into one work center unless operators need to schedule them individually.
  2. 2Create each work center with a clear code and description, the department, and cost rates for setup and run so job costing reflects reality.
  3. 3Define available hours using a shop calendar: shifts, days worked and holidays, plus how many machines or people each center has.
  4. 4Add resources such as individual machines or people where you need finer scheduling than the whole work center.
  5. 5Update the routings so every operation points to the correct work center, with setup time and run time per unit, and any queue or move time you want to plan around.
  6. 6Release a few real jobs, then use the scheduling view to see load per work center and move operations to resolve overloads.
  7. 7Compare scheduled against actual after a week and adjust the standard times, because stale standards break every schedule.

Work centers versus resources

A work center is a place work queues and costs accumulate. A resource is a specific machine or person inside it. Fewer, larger work centers make a simpler schedule and are fine when machines are interchangeable. Separate resources make sense when machines differ in capability, such as a small and large press brake or a 3-axis and 5-axis mill.

Over-detail is the common failure. If you schedule at a level your team will not keep up to date, the schedule is wrong from day one. Start coarse, and split only where the schedule repeatedly fails.

Making the schedule believable

Three inputs drive believable scheduling: capacity from the calendar, times from the routing, and progress from shop floor reporting. If operators do not report progress, the system cannot know what is finished, and the schedule drifts. This is why scheduling and data collection are one project, not two.

Use due dates and priorities deliberately. Decide whether the system schedules forward from today, backward from the due date, or both, and teach the planner what each view means so they do not mix them.

Sanity check for a routing operation
Setup hours + (run time per unit x quantity) = operation hours
Operation hours / (work center hours per day x units available) = days of load

Favorites and daily navigation

If your JobBOSS2 build supports favorites, they are normally added from the navigation menu or the screen header by marking the screen with a star or pin icon, and they then appear in a favorites list for quick access. Because the interface changes between releases, check the menu or the application help for the exact control.

Pick five screens per role. A planner might favor the schedule view, open jobs, late jobs, work center list and purchase orders due. Short favorites lists get used, long ones do not.

Common pitfalls

  • !Creating a work center per machine when nobody will maintain a schedule at that level.
  • !Leaving routing times at placeholder values, so every job looks like it fits.
  • !Ignoring shop calendar changes such as holidays and overtime.
  • !Scheduling without shop floor reporting, so finished operations still occupy capacity.
  • !Scheduling outside purchasing: a job cannot start if the material arrives later.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

Schedulers constantly ask which jobs will be late and why. An assistant grounded in your JobBOSS data can list jobs whose next operation is queued behind an overloaded work center, show the query behind the answer, and remain read-only. Netray can run it on-prem so your capacity and customer data stay in the shop's network.

Frequently asked questions

Should every machine be its own work center?

Only if you schedule and cost each machine separately. Interchangeable machines are usually one work center with a capacity of several machines. Separate them when capabilities or hourly rates differ enough to change quotes and schedules.

Why is my schedule always wrong?

Usually because routing times are guesses, the calendar is incomplete, or progress is not reported on the floor. Fix these three before changing scheduling settings, because no setting corrects bad inputs.

Can I see capacity load by work center?

Yes, scheduling views and load reports show hours scheduled against hours available per work center. Check the schedule and reporting menus in your build, or ask your reseller for the load report that matches your version.

How do I add a screen to favorites?

Look for a star or pin on the menu item or screen header and select it. If your version has no favorites, create desktop shortcuts or saved layouts. Application help for your build confirms the exact method.

JobBOSS2 Data Collection: How Shop Floor Labor and Job Tracking Work

JobBOSS2 data collection means operators identify themselves and a job operation at a shop floor station, start and stop time against that operation, and report quantities completed. That transaction becomes actual labor and progress on the job, which feeds job costing, scheduling and WIP. Most posting problems come from an inactive employee, an operation that is closed or not released, or a station that is not set up for the job's work center.

How to Close a Job in JobBOSS2

A job in JobBOSS2 will not close cleanly until every routing operation is marked complete, all material has been issued or returned, and all labor and cost transactions are posted. Review the job's Work In Process detail first, clear any open items, then change the job status to Complete and run final job costing before it is locked.

How to Create Custom Reports in JobBOSS and JobBOSS2

Start from the standard report closest to what you need, copy it, and change the copy in the report designer rather than editing the original. For anything the designer cannot express, write a SQL query or view against the JobBOSS database and use it in the designer or in Excel. The designer and the file format differ between classic JobBOSS and JobBOSS2, so check which one you are on.

We could not find an authoritative public definition of E2 error 5093, so treat any single-cause answer with caution. In practice, numbered E2 errors raised at login or while opening a module come from the client talking to the database: a changed server name, a SQL permission or login problem, a missing or mismatched driver, or a network or firewall change.
