MYOB Acumatica Manufacturing: Batch Size in BOMs and Production Orders

Question
myob acumatica manufacturing batch size

Also searched as

  • acumatica bom batch size
  • acumatica production order quantity scaling
  • acumatica manufacturing yield
  • acumatica lot size bom

Short answer

In Acumatica Manufacturing the bill of material is defined for a batch size: component quantities are the amounts needed to make that batch, and a production order scales them by order quantity divided by batch size. Yield and scrap factors then increase the required material. Setting the batch size to match how the plant actually makes the product keeps component requirements correct.

Applies to: Acumatica Manufacturing Edition and MYOB Acumatica in markets where it is sold under that name; field labels may vary by release

Set batch size correctly

  1. 1Open the Bill of Material for the item and revision and find the batch size field on the BOM.
  2. 2Enter the batch size as the quantity the listed material and operation quantities produce, for example 100 units or 1 mixer load.
  3. 3Enter material quantities for the whole batch, not per unit, unless the batch size is 1.
  4. 4Add scrap factor or yield assumptions on materials and operations where real losses occur.
  5. 5Create a production order for a test quantity and check the calculated material requirements.
  6. 6Compare against hand calculation: required quantity equals material quantity times order quantity divided by batch size, adjusted for scrap.
  7. 7Check that routing run times are also expressed against the same batch basis.

Why batch size matters

Many processes, especially mixing, blending, heat treatment and chemical work, have a natural batch size: a tank of 500 litres, an oven load of 200 parts. Defining the BOM for that batch is more natural than for one unit, and avoids fractional component quantities that lose precision.

The risk is mixing bases. If the BOM is per 100 units but the routing times are per unit, the production order will show nonsense labor and machine hours.

Scaling, yield and scrap

Scaling is linear: a production order for 250 units on a batch size of 100 needs 2.5 times the listed material. Real processes are rarely perfectly linear, so a minimum batch is sometimes enforced by planning policy or lot sizing on the item rather than the BOM.

Yield and scrap factors raise the quantity needed to deliver the good output. Use measured yields from production records, and revisit them. A scrap factor set once and never reviewed quietly distorts cost and purchasing.

Batch size versus lot size

Batch size on the BOM describes what the recipe produces. Lot size or order policy on the item and warehouse settings describes how planning groups demand into orders. They are separate controls, and confusing them is a frequent source of unexpected planned order quantities.

After changing a batch size on a live BOM, create a new revision rather than editing history, and check open production orders because they may not recalculate automatically.

Common pitfalls

  • !BOM quantities per batch but routing times per unit.
  • !Changing batch size on a BOM that open production orders use.
  • !Confusing BOM batch size with item lot size policy.
  • !Setting yield once and never reviewing it.
  • !Skipping a test production order after changes.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

An ERPray assistant can compare planned against actual material consumption across completed production orders and highlight BOMs where actual use per batch consistently exceeds the BOM, suggesting yield or batch size corrections for a planner to approve. It reads from the Acumatica data under the user's roles, and a local model option exists for private deployments.

Frequently asked questions

What is batch size in an Acumatica BOM?

The quantity of finished product that the BOM's material and operation quantities are defined for. A production order for a different quantity scales the requirements proportionally to the order quantity divided by batch size.

How are production order materials calculated?

Roughly material quantity times order quantity divided by batch size, then adjusted for scrap and yield factors. Always verify with a small test order and a hand calculation before trusting a new BOM in production.

Is MYOB Acumatica different from Acumatica?

MYOB Acumatica is the name under which Acumatica is sold in some markets by MYOB. The core platform and manufacturing functions are Acumatica's, though packaging, localizations and support arrangements differ.

Can I change a batch size after production orders exist?

Prefer to create a new BOM revision and apply it to new orders. Changing the active revision can affect open orders and cost rollups, so test in a copy of the tenant and review open orders first.

Acumatica Error: Inventory Quantity Will Go Negative

Acumatica blocks a release when the transaction would drive on-hand below zero for a stock item that does not allow negative quantity, tracked by warehouse, location and lot or serial. Fix it by receiving or adjusting the missing stock first, correcting the wrong warehouse, location or lot on the document, or, if the business really needs it, enabling Allow Negative Quantity on the item or its warehouse setup.

Fix Odoo AccessError: You Are Not Allowed to Access Records

Odoo raises AccessError when a user's security groups do not grant a CRUD right on a model through ir.model.access.csv, or when an ir.rule record rule filters the specific record out for that user or company. Fix it by adding the user to the group named in the error, editing the model's access rights, or reviewing the record rule's domain under Settings > Technical > Security.
