Teamcenter to SAP BOM transfer: why releases fail and how to fix them

Question
Teamcenter to SAP BOM transfer errors

Also searched as

  • Teamcenter Gateway for SAP material master transfer
  • Teamcenter SAP BOM release failed
  • BOMMAT IDoc error Teamcenter
  • Teamcenter to SAP change number engineering change

Short answer

Most failed Teamcenter to SAP transfers come from order and master data problems: the BOM was sent before its materials existed, a unit of measure or plant is missing, the SAP change number or status does not allow the update, or a mapping produced a value SAP rejects. Read the SAP-side message first (IDoc status, application log, BAPI return), then correct the Teamcenter data or the mapping.

Applies to: Siemens Teamcenter with Teamcenter Gateway for SAP (T4S) or equivalent connector, SAP ECC and S/4HANA; message and screen details vary by version and configuration.

Diagnose a failed Teamcenter to SAP transfer

  1. 1Identify the object that failed (material, BOM, document or change) and the transfer or release job in Teamcenter that sent it.
  2. 2Open the SAP result: for IDocs use WE02 or WE05 and read the status and the error segment text; for BAPI-based transfers read the RETURN messages or the application log in SLG1.
  3. 3Check that the material exists in the target plant and views first: display with MM03 and confirm base unit, material type and plant extension.
  4. 4Check the BOM header and items: usage, plant, alternative and base quantity, and that each item component exists, using CS03 or the BOM tables MAST, STKO and STPO.
  5. 5Check the change number if one is used: display with CC03 and confirm status, validity date and that the object type is allowed (BOMs, materials).
  6. 6Compare the Teamcenter value against SAP configuration for the rejected field (unit of measure, item category, material group, procurement type).
  7. 7Correct the source data or mapping in Teamcenter, resend only the failed objects, and confirm the SAP result.
  8. 8Add the failure cause to a team checklist so the next occurrence is prevented at the source.

How the transfer works

Teamcenter Gateway for SAP maps Teamcenter items, item revisions and BOM views to SAP materials, BOMs and documents and sends them using SAP interfaces such as BAPIs and IDocs, depending on configuration. Common IDoc types in these flows are MATMAS for material master and BOMMAT for bills of material. The Teamcenter side defines which objects are released and how attributes map to SAP fields.

The release is normally driven by a workflow or a transfer action on a released revision. Because SAP applies its own validation, a transfer that looks correct in Teamcenter can still be rejected. The reverse also happens: SAP accepts the data but it is wrong for production because of a mapping default.

Exact transaction behaviour depends on your gateway version and customer enhancements, so treat the checks here as the usual first places to look, not an exhaustive list.

WE02 / WE05 - display IDocs (status 51 = application document not posted, 53 = posted)
BD87 - status monitor for IDocs, reprocess after fixing
SLG1 - application log
MM03 - display material
CS03 - display BOM
CC03 - display change master
-- Quick BOM check in SAP tables (read only, via SE16N or a query tool)
-- MAST: material to BOM link; STKO: BOM header; STPO: BOM items
-- Filter MAST by MATNR and WERKS, then read STPO by STLNR

The usual error causes

Sequence: the BOM item references a component that is not yet in SAP or not extended to the plant. Send materials first, in the same release package or an earlier one, and block the BOM until the components exist. This is the most frequent cause.

Units of measure: Teamcenter allows free text or a different set of units than SAP. A unit such as 'EA' versus SAP's 'ST' (internal PC), or a unit with no conversion to the base unit, is rejected. Maintain a controlled mapping table and avoid free entry.

Material type, industry sector and views: new materials need valid material type, material group and plant data. If the gateway creates only basic data, MRP and purchasing views may be missing and planners cannot use the part. Decide who completes plant data and when.

Locks and authorizations: a material or BOM locked by a user in SAP, or an integration user without the right authorization objects, produces errors that look like data errors. Check SM12 for locks and the user's authorization trace with ST01 or SU53.

Change numbers, effectivity and status

Many sites use SAP engineering change management. A transfer can fail when the change number is expired, wrongly typed, or when the object is not allowed under that change. Decide whether Teamcenter sends the SAP change number or creates it, and keep that consistent.

BOM status and usage: a BOM with usage 1 (production) in a plant used by MRP has real consequences. Make sure engineering-only BOMs are not accidentally created with production usage. Test with a controlled plant before enabling production plants.

For revision and effectivity, SAP uses valid-from dates with change numbers, not Teamcenter revision letters. Be explicit on how a revision maps to a validity date and what happens to open production orders created with the earlier BOM.

Prevention and monitoring

Run a pre-check in Teamcenter before release that validates units, required attributes and component existence in SAP where possible. A check that blocks the release with a clear message saves hours of IDoc analysis.

Monitor failed IDocs daily and route them to a named owner. A growing backlog of status 51 IDocs means engineering believes parts are released when production cannot see them.

Keep a test plant or client with realistic master data. Many mapping issues only appear with real material types, plants and unit conversions.

Common pitfalls

  • !Releasing a BOM before its component materials exist in the target plant.
  • !Free-text units of measure in Teamcenter with no controlled mapping to SAP.
  • !Assuming a clean Teamcenter workflow means SAP accepted the data, without checking IDoc status.
  • !Creating materials with basic data only and no one assigned to complete plant views.
  • !Sending production-usage BOMs from test or prototype data.
  • !Ignoring SAP locks and integration-user authorizations when diagnosing.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

An assistant grounded in SAP can list the failed IDocs and their error text, tell you which materials in a failed BOM are missing from a plant, and show open production orders still using a superseded BOM. With ERPray it reads SAP data read-only, shows the query behind each answer and respects SAP roles. It does not fix master data or reprocess IDocs; those remain controlled actions by the right owner.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MATMAS and BOMMAT?

MATMAS is the IDoc message type for material master data, and BOMMAT is the IDoc message type for bills of material. A BOMMAT referencing components that do not yet exist as materials will fail, which is why materials should be sent first.

Where do I find why an IDoc failed?

Use WE02 or WE05 to open the IDoc, then read the status records and the text of the error. For reprocessing after a fix, BD87 is commonly used. The message text normally names the field, material or unit that was rejected.

Can Teamcenter create the SAP change number?

It depends on how the gateway and your enhancements are configured. Some sites create the change number in SAP and reference it from Teamcenter, others generate it from a Teamcenter change object. Pick one owner and document the rule to avoid duplicates.

Why does the BOM show in SAP but production cannot use it?

Typical causes are missing plant or MRP data on the parent, BOM usage or status that does not suit production, validity dates in the future, or an alternative BOM that the routing or order does not select. Check the validity date and the BOM selection in the production order.

How to Sync the BOM Between PLM and ERP

Make PLM the system of record for the engineering BOM (EBOM) and ERP the system of record for the manufacturing BOM (MBOM), and push only released data from PLM to ERP on a change-release event. Never edit the same BOM structure in both systems, and treat every failed transfer as a visible work item, not a silent log line.

ECO and ECN Process Across PLM and ERP

An ECR requests a change, an ECO authorizes and defines it, and an ECN notifies the organization once it is released. PLM should run the workflow up to release, and ERP should receive the released result with an effectivity and a disposition for existing stock and open orders.

How to send a Windchill BOM to your ERP

Release the BOM from Windchill on an approved change, not on demand. Use PTC's Enterprise Systems Integration (ESI) for a managed release to SAP or Oracle-class ERPs, or build the feed on Windchill REST Services (OData) for other targets. Map part, structure, revision and effectivity explicitly, and make the ERP response visible back in Windchill.

ISA-95 and B2MML: How to Integrate ERP with MES

ISA-95 defines the boundary between business systems (Level 4, the ERP) and manufacturing operations (Level 3, the MES) and the information that crosses it. B2MML is the XML implementation of those models. In practice you exchange a ProductionSchedule from ERP to MES, and ProductionPerformance, plus material and equipment information, back, mapping each element to your ERP's work order and confirmation APIs.

How to Send Production and Labor Reporting from MES to ERP

Treat the ERP work order as the system of record for cost and quantity, and the MES as the system of record for what physically happened. Send one confirmation message per operation (or per shift or lot) containing work order, operation sequence, good quantity, scrap quantity with reason, and labor start/stop per employee and work center, post it through the ERP's supported transaction API, and make the message idempotent so a retry never double-posts.

How-to

How to Calculate OEE from MES Data and ERP Standards

OEE equals Availability times Performance times Quality. Availability comes from MES run and stop events against planned production time, Performance compares actual output to the ideal cycle time (usually the routing standard from the ERP), and Quality is good units divided by total units. The numbers are only trustworthy if planned time, ideal cycle time and the good/scrap split are defined once and used consistently.
