Timed out waiting for response from Mongoose: fixing the request timeout

Error
timed out waiting for response from mongoose

  • SyteLine request timed out
  • Mongoose timeout waiting for response
  • SyteLine slow form times out

Short answer

This message means a request to the Mongoose app server did not return before a timeout expired. The fix depends on which layer timed out: the client call, IIS, the IDO runtime, or the SQL query underneath. Slow SQL is the most common real cause, so tuning the query beats just raising limits.

Applies to: SyteLine 9.x and CloudSuite Industrial 10.x on-premises and hosted

Find and fix the timing-out layer

  1. 1Determine whether it is one slow action (a report, a large filter) or everything. Everything points to server health; one action points to a query.
  2. 2Time the action and note the user, form, filter values and time of day.
  3. 3Check the app server: CPU, memory, application pool recycling and any IIS errors around that time.
  4. 4Check SQL Server for the same period: blocking, long-running queries, missing indexes, and statistics that are out of date.
  5. 5If the query is slow, narrow the filter, add an index through a supported route, or move the heavy logic to a background task.
  6. 6Only then review timeout values on the client, IIS and the app server configuration and raise them modestly if the work is legitimately long.
  7. 7For long operations, run them as background tasks rather than interactive requests.
  8. 8Retest with the same user and filter to confirm the fix.

Which timeout is firing

A request passes through several layers, each with its own limit: the client waiting on the server, the web server (IIS) request limit, the app server's call to the database, and SQL Server's own execution. The one with the shortest limit gives up first, and the message names the layer closest to the user.

This is different from a session timeout where you are logged out for being idle. See the session timeout page for that case. Here the user is active and the request itself is slow.

SQL is usually the real problem

Raising a timeout hides a slow query rather than fixing it. Look for blocking from another session, large unfiltered grids loading hundreds of thousands of rows, custom views or functions with scans, and statistics or indexes that have degraded after large data loads.

A weekly index and statistics maintenance job is the baseline. For repeated slow forms, capture the actual query from SQL Server and check its plan.

-- Currently running requests and blockers
SELECT r.session_id, r.blocking_session_id, r.wait_type, r.total_elapsed_time, t.text
FROM sys.dm_exec_requests r
CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(r.sql_handle) t
WHERE r.session_id > 50;

When raising a timeout is reasonable

If a task legitimately takes minutes (a large export, a regeneration), move it to a background task so the user is not waiting on an open request. Where that is not possible, raise the specific timeout that fires, and by the smallest amount that works.

Make changes in one layer at a time and document the old and new values. Mismatched settings across IIS, the app server and a load balancer create confusing partial fixes.

Common pitfalls

  • !Raising every timeout at once without finding the slow layer.
  • !Ignoring blocking sessions.
  • !Running large reports interactively at peak times.
  • !Confusing idle session timeouts with request timeouts.
  • !Not rechecking after IIS or app pool changes.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

A grounded assistant can look at the slow action, find the underlying IDO and query, pull the blocking and wait data from SQL Server and summarize likely causes with the evidence. Keeping it on-prem means query text and plans stay inside your network. It recommends; your DBA decides on indexes.

Frequently asked questions

Does this error mean the Mongoose server is down?

Not necessarily. It means a response did not arrive in time. The server may be healthy but a query is slow, or it may be overloaded. Check server and SQL health to tell which.

Should I just increase the timeout?

Only after finding why it is slow. Raising a limit hides slow queries and can tie up server resources. If the work is legitimately long, use a background task or raise the one relevant timeout slightly.

How is this different from the session timeout error?

A session timeout logs you out after inactivity. This error occurs during an active request that takes too long. Different settings control each, so the fixes differ.

Why is it worse at certain times of day?

Peak order entry, background tasks, backups or index jobs can cause contention. Check what else runs at that time, and move heavy jobs out of business hours.

Diagnosing and fixing SyteLine session timeout errors

SyteLine session timeouts come from one of three independent layers: the IDO Data Service session timeout on the app server, the IIS/application pool idle timeout for the web (Mongoose Web) client, or a load balancer/proxy idle timeout in front of a CloudSuite hosted environment. Fixing the wrong layer is the most common mistake - you need to identify which layer is actually expiring the session before changing anything.

How to Improve SQL Server Performance for a Slow SyteLine ERP System

Most SyteLine performance complaints trace back to a handful of SQL Server issues: stale statistics, missing indexes on high-churn IDO tables, blocking caused by the default isolation level, and IDO Runtime connection pool exhaustion. Working through those systematically, with DMV evidence, resolves the majority of slow system tickets faster than guessing at application-layer causes.

How-to

SyteLine Freezing for Everyone: Find the SQL Head Blocker

When several SyteLine users freeze at once, a single session holding locks and blocking a chain of others is a common cause. Query sys.dm_exec_requests for blocking_session_id, walk the chain to the head blocker, read its statement and open transaction, and decide whether to wait, fix the caller, or end the session.

How to Schedule a Background Task in SyteLine Task Manager

SyteLine's Task Manager lets an administrator schedule recurring background work - an MRP or APS regeneration, a report run, a custom IDO method, or an external program - without a user triggering it manually from the client. You define a task with what to run and on what recurrence, and the Task Manager background service picks it up and executes it at the scheduled time.

Error fix

Fixing SyteLine's 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object' error

This is a generic .NET NullReferenceException surfacing through the SyteLine IDO Runtime, not a SyteLine-specific error code. It almost always means a form, script or IDO method referenced a field, row or object that came back null, usually after a customization, a missing related record, or a view/IDO method call before the form finished loading. Turn on detailed client logging and check the most recent customization or form event first.

Error fix

Resolving SyteLine multi-site replication conflict errors

A replication conflict in SyteLine's multi-site architecture means the same record (commonly an item, customer, or BOM) was changed independently at two sites between replication cycles, and the replication engine could not automatically merge the two versions. Check the replication conflict log first to see which record and which fields collided, then decide which site's version should win before resuming the queue.
