What Is Configurable BOM?
Also known as: variant BOM, option-based BOM, modular BOM, product configurator BOM
Definition
A configurable BOM is a bill of materials generated or adjusted from the options a customer selects, so that one product family with many possible variants does not need a separate stored BOM for every combination.
Configurable BOM Explained
Configure-to-order products, such as machines, enclosures, vehicles and custom equipment, can have thousands of valid combinations. Storing every combination as a BOM is unmanageable. A configurable BOM stores a base structure plus option groups and rules: if option X is selected, add these components and remove those.
Two common designs exist. A modular or planning BOM groups the choices into option families with percentage splits for forecasting. A variant or generated BOM creates a customer-specific BOM and routing when the order is entered, which then flows to MRP and the shop floor like any other.
ERP capability varies widely. Infor LN includes a product configurator for engineer-to-order and configure-to-order. SyteLine supports configurators with rule-based BOM and routing generation and can use the Product Configurator module. NetSuite and others typically need an add-on configurator. Without a configurator, teams often use phantom BOMs and kits as a lightweight approach.
Rule quality is the main risk. Missing constraints allow invalid combinations that cannot be built, and engineering has to fix the order after it has been promised.
Why It Matters
- It avoids maintaining thousands of near-duplicate BOMs and routings.
- Quotes and delivery dates get faster and more consistent when rules enforce valid combinations.
- Forecasting by option share supports building common modules ahead of orders.
- Cost accuracy requires that every option carries its own components and operations.
In Practice
A control panel family has 4 enclosure sizes, 3 voltage ratings and 6 optional modules. That is far more than 70 combinations by count, yet only about 25 components differ. A configurator creates the order-specific BOM from selections, and rejects a 24V module on a size 1 enclosure that physically cannot fit it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a configurable BOM and a standard BOM?
A standard BOM is fixed. A configurable BOM changes based on selected options, usually through rules or a configurator.
What is a planning BOM?
A BOM that groups options with forecast percentages so MRP can plan common modules before exact orders arrive.
Do I need a configurator for this?
Not for a handful of variants. Phantoms and option items may be enough. A configurator pays off once combinations number in the hundreds.

BOM (Bill of Materials)
A BOM (bill of materials) is the structured, hierarchical list of components, sub-assemblies, and quantities required to produce one unit of a parent item, and it is the primary input MRP explodes to calculate material requirements.
Phantom BOM
A phantom BOM is a subassembly that exists in the bill of material for engineering clarity but is never stocked or built as its own order. Planning blows straight through it, passing demand directly to its components on the parent job.
Multi-Level BOM
A multi-level BOM lists a finished product and each of its sub-assemblies and components in nested levels, so you can see the full structure from the end item down to raw material, rather than only the immediate children.
CTP (Capable to Promise)
CTP (capable to promise) is an order promising method that goes beyond available inventory by simulating whether required material and work center capacity can be obtained in time, returning a delivery date the plant can actually achieve.
