Infor LN planning BOM: how it works, setup and use (and what people mean by SIC planning)

Question
infor ln planning bom

Short answer

A planning BOM is a structure used by Enterprise Planning to plan at family or option level, rather than the production BOM used on shop orders. You maintain planning items and a planning structure with proportions, and the planning engine uses it to explode forecasts into component and capacity requirements. 'SIC planning' is not a term I can pin to a single standard LN feature, so check how your site uses it.

Applies to: Infor LN 10.x Enterprise Planning. Exact sessions and field names vary by version.

Use a planning BOM

  1. 1Decide which level you want to plan: finished goods, product families or options. Planning BOMs suit configure-to-order and high-variety families.
  2. 2Mark the relevant items as planning items in the item planning data and assign them to the correct plan unit or plan group.
  3. 3Create the planning BOM structure with the child items and the proportions or percentages for each option.
  4. 4Load a forecast on the family item, not on every end item.
  5. 5Run the planning (generate the plan) and review the exploded demand on the components and the capacity requirements.
  6. 6Review the supply plan and release the planned orders through the normal order planning route.

Planning BOM versus production BOM

A production BOM is the exact recipe used to build an item and to issue material. A planning BOM models expected mix: for example, a 'product family' that is 60 percent variant A and 40 percent variant B. It lets planners forecast one number and still drive component procurement.

Do not try to use a planning BOM to issue material. It supports planning decisions only. If you need to build exactly what is in a sales order, the engineering BOM path applies.

Common mistakes

Proportions not summing to 100 percent, planning items not attached to a plan unit, and forecasts loaded on the wrong level are the top three. Another is expecting changes to the production BOM to appear in the planning BOM automatically; they are maintained separately and need a governance rule.

If MRP shows no planned orders for components, see the related page on planned orders not generated.

About SIC planning

Searches for 'SIC planning' appear in LN contexts, but the abbreviation is used differently across companies and eras, and I cannot assert a single standard definition. Ask your LN consultant or check your own functional documentation; if it refers to a custom or legacy Baan concept, document it before migration.

Common pitfalls

  • !Proportions that do not total 100 percent.
  • !Forecasting at the wrong level.
  • !Letting production and planning BOMs drift apart.
  • !Using planning BOMs for material issue.
  • !Undocumented local terminology that nobody remembers after staff change.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

An AI layer can compare your production BOM and planning BOM for the same family, flag proportion errors and show which components lack planned orders and why. Netray works on private, read-only access to LN data, with human approval before any write-back.

Frequently asked questions

What is a planning BOM in Infor LN?

It is a structure used by Enterprise Planning to plan at family or option level, with proportions for child items, so demand can be forecast at an aggregate level and exploded to components.

Is a planning BOM the same as a phantom BOM?

No. A phantom is a real production structure that is not stocked. A planning BOM is a planning construct for mix and does not drive production issue.

Where do I load the forecast?

On the planning item that heads the structure. Loading it on end items double counts demand.

What does SIC mean in LN planning?

I cannot confirm one standard meaning; the term varies between sites. Ask your consultant what it refers to in your configuration.

How-to

Infor LN Enterprise Planning Not Generating Planned Orders

When an item has demand but Enterprise Planning creates no planned orders, the cause is almost always planning master data: the item is not set to be planned, the planning horizon or time fences exclude the demand, the order policy or supply source is missing, or the planning run did not include the item. Check them in that order before suspecting the engine.

How Sales Schedules Work in Infor LN: Releases and Cumulative Quantities

A sales schedule in Infor LN holds a customer's rolling demand as a series of releases, each replacing the last, with lines split into firm and planned quantities. LN tracks cumulative quantities shipped against the customer's cumulative received so that a new release can be reconciled without double counting or dropping demand.

How-to

Calendars in Infor LN: create, assign and how they drive planning

Infor LN calendars define working and non-working days and available hours. You create a calendar with its day types and exceptions, assign it to enterprise units (such as sites, work centers or warehouses), and planning, scheduling and delivery date calculations use the calendar of the relevant unit.

How to diagnose and fix a slow Infor LN session

A slow Infor LN session is usually caused by an unindexed or overly broad database query, unarchived data bloating a transaction table, or resource pressure on the Java application tier, and occasionally by a recently added custom DAL2 handler. The fix starts with isolating which tier the delay is actually in rather than guessing at a solution.

Error fix

Infor LN bshell Process Stuck at 100% CPU: How to Diagnose and Fix It

A bshell process pinned at 100% CPU on the Infor LN application server almost always means one session is stuck in a 4GL loop, scanning an unindexed table, or waiting on a database lock. End the session from the Sessions Monitor first, then kill the OS process only if that fails, and check for a blocking database transaction before assuming it is a bug.

Error fix

Infor LN Not Authorized to Run This Session: How to Fix It

Infor LN refuses to open a session with a not authorized message when the logged-in user's assigned role does not include that session, or when the session is blocked for the company they are logged into. Grant the session through Common > Authorization Management > Roles, or check the user's role and company context, and the session opens on retry. In most cases this is a permissions configuration issue, not a bug.
