SAP Variant Combination and Test Scope Calculator
A configurable product with five characteristics can easily have hundreds of combinations, and nobody will test them all. This calculator shows how fast the number grows and helps you size a defensible test sample.
Your numbers
Allowed values of the first characteristic, for example motor power.
Your results
Pure sampling will not find every defect. Test every value at least once and every dependency rule with a passing and a failing case, then use the sample for the interaction between values.
Valid variants as characteristic 1 grows
Sweeps Values in characteristic 1 from 1 to 20, holding your other inputs fixed.
Real variant count from your data
Optional analysis of valid combinations from your own class and dependency data.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use it
Enter the number of allowed values for each characteristic. Set the share of combinations your dependencies block, then choose what share of valid variants you want to test and the time per run. The result shows raw and valid combinations, the number of test runs and the effort. Use the chart to see how adding values to one characteristic multiplies the total.
- Count only released values
- Estimate the blocked share from your dependency list
- Use at least ten percent for high risk products
- Add time for defect retests
The formula
Raw combinations are the product of the value counts of all characteristics. Valid variants are raw combinations multiplied by one minus the blocked share. Test runs are the valid variants multiplied by the sample share, rounded up. Effort is runs multiplied by minutes per run. The numbers grow multiplicatively, which is why a single new characteristic with four values can multiply the test scope by four.
Reading the result
A small valid count may be tested nearly completely. A large one needs a risk based approach: cover each value, each rule and each pair of values that interact. Use the effort figure for the project plan, and use the chart to show stakeholders what an extra option really costs in test and maintenance.
Common mistakes
People estimate the blocked share too high, which hides the true scope. Others test a random sample and miss a rule that blocks only a few combinations. Quantity and numeric characteristics with intervals are another trap, since the number of possible values is not a simple count. Treat ranges as a few representative points.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many variants does my configurable product have?
Multiply the number of allowed values of every characteristic to get raw combinations, then remove those blocked by dependencies. The calculator does this and shows the effort to test a sample.
Do I need to test all valid variants?
Usually not. Test every value, every dependency rule and the main interactions. A sample percentage adds confidence. Full coverage is only practical for small variant sets.
How do I handle numeric characteristics?
Use representative points: the minimum, the maximum, typical values and values just outside the allowed range. Count those as the number of values for the calculator.
Why does the count grow so fast?
Because combinations multiply. Adding one characteristic with three values triples the total. That is why dependencies and good modelling matter for both maintenance and testing.
