How to add AI agents to abas ERP

Short answer

Add AI agents to abas ERP by wrapping the EDP interface (and the REST or Java object layer in newer versions) in a small set of typed tools, then letting an agent call them with read access first. Writes go through an approval step, and the model can run on your own GPUs so data never leaves the plant.

abas ERP is common in German-speaking and wider European mid-market manufacturers: machine builders, tool makers, electronics assemblers and contract manufacturers that run variant-heavy, project-driven production. Many of them run it on their own servers, with years of customer-specific screens, infosystems and field operating programs (FOPs) on top of a proprietary database accessed through EDP.

The agent opportunity here is not a chatbot that reads reports. It is a worker that watches the exceptions a planner or buyer chases every morning: late purchase orders, shortages against production orders, quotes waiting for a price, and open sales orders with a changed delivery date. The agent gathers the evidence across several records, proposes the action, and waits for a person to approve.

The honest constraint is the interface. abas data is reached through EDP sessions and, depending on version, REST endpoints or the Java object layer, not through a plain SQL schema you can point a tool at. A good agent design starts by deciding which of those paths you license and trust.

What teams use it for

Late purchase order chasing

Each morning an agent reads open purchase order lines past their confirmed date, checks which production orders depend on them, and drafts a supplier reminder for the buyer to approve and send.

Shortage triage before production release

Before a production order is released, the agent checks material availability across the bill of materials, lists the short items with alternative suppliers or stock elsewhere, and posts a ranked summary to the planner.

Quote assembly for variant products

For configured machines, the agent pulls similar past quotes and their actual costs, proposes a price range and flags positions that historically overran, leaving the sales engineer to finalise.

Delivery date change propagation

When a sales order date moves, the agent finds the linked production and purchase documents, summarises the knock-on effects and drafts the customer notification.

Master data hygiene

An agent scans for parts with missing units, duplicate suppliers or inconsistent lead times and files proposed corrections as a review list, never applying them directly.

abas ERP integration surface

  • EDP (Enterprise Data Processing) interface: the server-side protocol to read and write abas records, typically reached over a dedicated server port, with each session consuming a user license in many setups. Confirm the exact port and licensing for your version.
  • Selection and field syntax: EDP queries use abas selection criteria against database/group/field names, which is what your read tools will wrap.
  • Java object layer and EDP clients: abas ships Java libraries so integrations can read and write objects with typed access, usable from a small service you control.
  • REST or web interfaces in newer releases: some current versions expose REST endpoints and an integration layer, but coverage varies by version and configuration, so verify what your install offers.
  • Infosystems and FOPs: custom infosystems can be wrapped as read-only tools, and FOPs can host business rules the agent must not bypass.

How it works

  1. 1

Pick the interface and a service account

Decide between EDP direct, the Java object layer or REST. Create a dedicated abas user with the narrowest roles that cover the data your first agent needs, and confirm the license impact.

  2. 2

    Build a thin tool service

Write a small service exposing typed functions such as get_open_po_lines, get_shortages and get_sales_order. Each function validates input, runs a bounded selection and returns trimmed JSON.

  3. 3

    Keep it read-only first

Ship only read tools for the first weeks. Log every call and let planners compare agent summaries with what they would have found manually.

  4. 4

    Add a planning loop

Use an open-weight model with tool calling to plan which tools to call and in what order. Cap the number of calls per task and the rows per call.

  5. 5

    Introduce approval-gated writes

Expose write tools only as proposals: the agent produces a draft record or message, a person approves in a review queue, and the service performs the EDP write under the approver's identity or an audited service identity.

  6. 6

    Schedule and monitor

Trigger agents on a schedule or from events, track tool errors, session counts and approval rates, and tune prompts using rejected proposals.

Example flows

Morning shortage report

Trigger: Scheduled at 06:30 each weekday

  1. Agent selects production orders due in the next ten working days
  2. For each, it reads the exploded requirements and current stock
  3. It reads open purchase order lines and confirmed dates for short items
  4. It ranks shortages by the earliest affected customer date
  5. It posts the ranked list to the planner with the evidence behind each line

Result: The planner starts the day with a prioritised list instead of running several infosystems by hand.

Supplier reminder draft

Trigger: A purchase order line is three days past its confirmed date

  1. Agent reads the line, supplier contact and previous reminders
  2. It checks whether production orders depend on the part
  3. It drafts a reminder in the supplier's language with the order reference
  4. The buyer approves, edits or discards the draft

Result: Reminders go out consistently, and the approval log shows which ones buyers changed.

Keeping data on-prem

Because abas is frequently self-hosted, the whole agent stack can be as well. Run the tool service on a server in the same network as the abas application server, host an open-weight model with vLLM or Ollama on local GPUs, and keep the vector index and logs on local storage. Only the model weights come from outside, once. If your plant is air-gapped, transfer weights and the tool service by controlled media. Size the GPU for concurrency during the morning run, not just average load, and keep the EDP service account network-restricted to the tool service host.

Security checklist

  • Dedicated abas user with minimal roles, never a personal or administrator login
  • Read tools bounded by row limits and field allow-lists so the model cannot dump whole tables
  • Write operations only as human-approved proposals, with the approver recorded
  • Full audit log of prompts, tool calls and returned records, stored on-prem
  • Network isolation of the model host with no outbound internet for regulated sites

Ways to get it done

Build in-house on the Java object layer or REST

Effort: Several weeks for a read-only pilot, longer for approved writes.

You have developers who already maintain abas customisations and want full control.

Use an abas partner or a system integrator

Effort: Pilot scoped in weeks, depends on partner capacity.

Your abas estate has heavy customisation and you want someone who knows the data model to define the tools.

Work with Netray

Effort: A scoped pilot on one process, then expansion once the approval rates look right.

You want a private agent stack, on-prem models and an approval workflow built around your abas data, ideally alongside your abas partner.

Pitfalls

  • !EDP sessions can count against licenses, so an agent that opens a session per request can exhaust seats. Pool and reuse sessions.
  • !Customer-specific fields and FOP logic mean the same record can behave differently from the standard documentation. Test on your own client data.
  • !Language and units: field labels and descriptions may be in German or multilingual, and the model needs a glossary to map them reliably.
  • !Unbounded selections on large tables slow the application server for everyone. Always cap rows and filter on indexed fields.
  • !Skipping the approval step on early write tools erodes trust quickly after the first wrong order change.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI agent write into abas ERP safely?

Yes, if writes are proposals that a person approves. The service then performs the write through EDP or the object layer under an audited identity. Keep business rules in the ERP so validation still applies, and avoid giving the model direct write credentials.

Does abas have its own AI features I should use first?

The vendor has been adding AI-related capabilities in recent releases, and for simple assistance that may be enough. Check your version and licensing. A custom agent makes sense when you need cross-record workflows, your own approval logic or fully private models.

Which model should run an abas agent?

A mid-size open-weight model with reliable tool calling, served locally, is usually enough for exception triage. Test on real records, including German field names, and measure tool-call accuracy before choosing.

How much of the abas database can the agent see?

Only what your tools expose. Define each tool narrowly with field allow-lists and row caps, and tie it to a service user whose abas roles match. That keeps the agent inside your existing permission model.

Will agents slow down our abas server?

They can if queries are unbounded or sessions pile up. Use scheduled runs off-peak, cache stable reference data, and cap calls per task. Monitor the application server during the pilot before widening scope.
