Find the Real Constraint
Most shops assume the tank is the bottleneck, then discover it is racks, or masking labor, or the bake oven. Measure it. Count loads per shift per line over a month, and note where work waits.
In a zinc nickel line, the bottleneck may be the plating tank at a long cycle time; in an anodize shop with many small custom racks, it may be racking labor; in a shop doing high-strength steel plating, it may be the post-plate bake window, since many specifications require baking within a set number of hours after plating.
- Rack inventory, especially custom fixtures for repeat parts
- Tank time per cycle and number of parallel tanks per process
- Masking and de-masking labor
- Bake oven capacity and the time window after plating
- Final inspection and test turnaround, including salt spray lead time
Sequence and Changeover Rules
Not all work can be loaded in any order. Alloy-specific anodize, dye colors, sealing methods and certain chemistries need cleaner transitions or dedicated tanks. Group jobs by process and color, and avoid scheduling a sensitive finish right after a contaminating one.
Capture these rules once, per line, and have the scheduler check them. Otherwise they live in one supervisor's head, and vacations create rework.
Rush Jobs and Quoted Lead Times
Rush jobs are the main schedule killer in finishing because the work is the last step before shipment, so every upstream delay lands on you. Charge an expedite fee that covers displaced loads and set a clear policy for how many rush loads per day the line will take. Quote lead times from real load capacity: if three days of line time are already booked, a one day promise should be a conscious exception, not a default.

Estimate the lead time to quote a customer from queue load, setup, run time, material wait, outside processing, transit and a safety buffer.
What to Show on the Schedule
A useful finishing schedule is simple. Show each line and tank by day with booked load hours, the jobs in each load, their due dates and any hold such as awaiting customer approval, first article or spec clarification. Color late-risk jobs.
Add a view for bake and test queues. Whether this is a whiteboard, a spreadsheet, finite-scheduling in an ERP module or a dedicated tool, the key is that it is based on load and tank hours rather than order due dates alone.
Where AI Helps
A model over your job history can estimate how long similar loads actually took and flag when a quoted date does not fit the booked capacity. It can answer planners' questions in plain language, such as 'which jobs due this week need the bake oven' or 'how many hours of anodize are booked next Tuesday'. Final sequencing decisions should remain with the supervisor.
AI does not replace a finite scheduler, it makes the data behind your schedule easier to question.
When Whiteboard Scheduling Is Fine
A single-line shop with a few dozen jobs in process and a supervisor who knows the line can run well on a whiteboard plus a shared spreadsheet. Invest in scheduling tools when you have several lines, many customers on tight lead times or frequent quote-date misses.
Frequently asked questions
How do you schedule a plating line?
Identify the constraint (racks, tanks, masking or bake), load work by process and compatibility, reserve post-plate bake time where specs require it, and promise dates from booked load hours. Review the schedule daily because rush jobs and rework change it constantly.
What is the bake requirement after plating high-strength steel?
Many specifications require a hydrogen embrittlement relief bake within a set time after plating, with temperature and duration set by the spec and the part's strength. Check the governing specification and customer PO, since requirements vary by part hardness and customer.
Can my ERP finite scheduling handle a plating line?
It can if you model the tank, rack or oven as a resource and give routings realistic load times. Many shops find it simpler to schedule at the tank and bake level than to schedule every piece-level operation.
If late shipments trace back to guessed lead times, Netray can show an assistant that checks quoted dates against booked line capacity using your own job history.
