How BarTender connects to Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine)
SQL trigger table (traditional, on-prem)
A custom or standard process writes a row per label into a table, and BarTender's database trigger watches that table, merges the row into a template and prints. Using a status column on the row lets you mark labels printed and retry failures.
IDO extension class calling a web service (cloud, community pattern)
Where you cannot reach the database, a SyteLine IDO extension class can call a BarTender-side web service with the label data. This is custom development, so it is only as supportable as the code you write and test.
Mongoose file server folder or object-store drop (cloud, community pattern)
SyteLine writes a text or XML file to a folder or storage location, and BarTender picks it up and prints. The community thread on cloud label printing describes these options. None is vendor certified, so test upgrades.
What data moves
| From | To | Data | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| SyteLine receiving, shipping or job transactions | BarTender trigger table or file | Item, lot, quantity, location, PO or order reference | Operator posts receipt, pick, ship or job completion |
| BarTender | Label printer | Rendered label from template | New row or file detected |
| BarTender | Trigger table status | Printed or failed flag | After the print job completes or errors |
| SyteLine item and customer master | BarTender template data | Descriptions, customer part numbers, compliance text | At label request time |
Setting it up
- 1Inventory your labelsList every label (receiving, container, pallet, shipping, work order, serial) with its size, printer and required fields before building anything.
- 2Choose the trigger patternOn-prem with database access: a trigger table. Cloud without database access: a web service, IDO extension or file drop. Pick one and keep it consistent.
- 3Design the label data table or file layoutOne row or file per label, with columns for every template field, a template name, a printer name, quantity of copies and a status flag.
- 4Build templates in BarTenderBind template fields to the trigger columns. Keep template names stable because the printing process refers to them by name.
- 5Hook the SyteLine sideAdd the event that writes the label row, from a custom form, event handler, IDO method or scheduled job, depending on where the label must be requested.
- 6Configure the BarTender serviceRun Integration Builder or the print server as a service on a machine with access to the table or folder and the printers, with its own service account.
- 7Test with real transactionsPrint each label type from live-style transactions, including lot and serial items, reprints and multi-copy runs, and verify scanner readability.
- 8Plan the upgrade checkAdd label printing to your SyteLine upgrade regression list, since customisations and schema changes can silently break it.
What usually breaks
- !Cloud tenants cannot host a database trigger, so a design copied from an on-prem site will not work without a different transport.
- !Duplicate prints when a retry job resends rows that BarTender already printed and nobody updated the status flag.
- !Template field names drift from column names after someone edits one side, producing blank labels.
- !Unit of measure and lot or serial formats on the label differ from what the scanner or customer expects.
- !The print service runs under a personal account whose password expires, silently stopping all labels.
- !Community patterns are not vendor certified, so a SyteLine upgrade or schema change can break them without notice.
A private AI layer across both systems
Missing and failed label triage
An assistant reading both the SyteLine transaction and the label trigger table can show 'receipts posted today with no label row' or 'rows stuck in failed', and draft a reprint list for a supervisor to approve.
Label content check
Compare the data printed on a label against the item, lot and customer records to catch wrong revisions or missing compliance text before shipment, as a review aid.
Template impact lookup
Ask in plain language which templates use a given field or customer, so changes to a customer's labelling requirements can be scoped quickly.
When something else fits better
- For simple needs, native SyteLine reports printed to a label-capable printer may be enough without a separate label product.
- A WMS or RF suite with built-in labelling may be a better fit if you also need directed putaway and scanning.
- Other label products such as NiceLabel or Loftware follow the same trigger-file pattern, so choose by what your IT team already runs.
Frequently asked questions
Is BarTender a certified SyteLine integration?
The patterns documented by the Infor community, such as SQL trigger tables, IDO extensions and Mongoose file server folders, are community practice rather than a vendor certified connector. That is workable, but you own the testing and upgrade risk.
How do I print labels from multi-tenant cloud SyteLine?
You cannot rely on a database table the printer watches. The community describes calling a web service from an IDO extension, writing files through the Mongoose file server, or dropping files to cloud storage that BarTender collects.
Why do labels print twice?
Usually because the process that retries failed rows does not update a printed flag, or because the same transaction fires the label event twice. Add a unique key per label and a status column, and make the retry job check it.
Can AI help manage labels?
It can find receipts or shipments without a matching label row and draft reprint lists for approval. It should not change label templates or write to SyteLine without a human reviewing the change.
