EDI 830 Planning Schedule Skeleton Generator for Automotive Suppliers
The 830 Planning Schedule with Release Capability is the forecast message that many automotive customers send to suppliers, usually alongside the 862 shipping schedule. This generator builds a small, well-formed 830 you can use to test a mapping or understand the structure.

Sample for mapping tests only. Segments, qualifiers, version (004010 shown) and which fields are required differ by customer implementation guide, so always follow the trading partner guide. SE01 counts segments from ST through SE inclusive; update it if you add or remove lines.
EDI schedule monitoring
Optional: we can discuss how inbound schedules could be summarised and checked against ERP planning data.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the generator
Fill in the envelope IDs, the release number, the horizon dates, the ship-to and supplier codes, the part numbers and up to three weekly quantities. The output has four blocks: the interchange and group envelope, the transaction header, the item and forecast lines, and the trailer. Copy the result into a flat file and feed it to your EDI translator or ERP inbound map to confirm the segments parse. ISA06 and ISA08 must be padded to exactly 15 characters.
What each segment does
BFR opens the schedule: purpose code, reference, release number, schedule type (DL for delivery based, SH for shipment based), quantity type (A for actual discrete quantities) and the horizon dates. N1 identifies parties. LIN ties buyer and vendor part numbers. UIT is the unit of measure. FST carries each forecast quantity with a qualifier for firm or planning (C or D), a timing qualifier such as W for weekly, and the date. CTT counts line items.
- BFR04 DL is delivery based, SH is shipment based
- FST02 C is firm, D is planning forecast
- SE01 is the number of segments from ST to SE
830 versus 862 and 866
The 830 is a rolling forecast. The 862 is the shipping schedule that confirms near-term firm releases with exact dates and quantities, and automotive suppliers often receive both. Some customers also send 866 for production sequence. Your planning system should treat the 830 as demand forecast input for MRP and the 862 as the near-term commitment. Mixing them leads to over- or under-building.
Common mistakes
The usual errors are wrong ISA padding, an incorrect SE segment count, and dates in the wrong format. Another is ignoring cumulative quantities: many customers also send cumulative received data through REF or QTY segments, which this simple skeleton leaves out. Check the customer implementation guide for those. Finally, never load a skeleton into a production inbound queue without marking it as test data.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the BFR segment in an 830 contain?
BFR is the beginning segment for the planning schedule. It holds the purpose code, a schedule reference, the release number, the schedule type and quantity qualifiers, the horizon start and end dates, and the issue date.
What is the difference between FST codes C and D?
In the FST segment the forecast qualifier C means firm and D means planning. Firm quantities are a commitment, while planning quantities are an estimate that can change in later releases.
Does this generate production-ready EDI?
No. It is a teaching and testing skeleton. Production maps must follow the trading partner's implementation guide, including versions, qualifiers, cumulative data and any required segments such as SDP or SHP.
How do I count the SE segment total?
SE01 is the total number of segments in the transaction set, counting ST and SE themselves. The sample has 11. If you add another FST or N1 line, increase the number by one for each added segment.
If your inbound 830 and 862 data feeds planning in SyteLine, SAP or another ERP, Netray can discuss monitoring and explaining those schedules with a private assistant.
