D365 Finance and Supply Chain Inventory Dimensions Reference

Inventory dimensions decide how D365 Finance and Supply Chain slices on-hand stock, reserves it, costs it and plans it. This table lists the product, storage and tracking dimensions and the dimension group flags that most often cause rework when set wrongly.

Product
Configuration
Product dimension
Part of the product variant. Used for configurable builds where each configuration has its own on-hand.
Product
Size
Product dimension
Variant attribute. Combined with other product dimensions to define a product variant.
Product
Color
Product dimension
Variant attribute. Combined with other product dimensions to define a product variant.

Product dimension
Variant attribute. Combined with other product dimensions to define a product variant.
Product
Version
Product dimension
Variant attribute available on the product dimension group for products that carry versions.
Storage
Site
Storage dimension
Top level of the storage hierarchy. Required for inventoried items and the basis for site-level costing and planning.
Storage
Warehouse
Storage dimension
Belongs to one site. Required for inventoried items.
Storage
Location
Storage dimension
Used with warehouse management processes. Needs a warehouse that is enabled for WMS.
Storage
Inventory status
Storage dimension
Classifies stock as available, blocked or other statuses. Used by WMS and reservation logic.
Storage
License plate
Storage dimension
Identifies a container or pallet. Used in WMS processes.
Tracking
Batch number
Tracking dimension
Tracks lots. Active when the tracking dimension group has the batch number dimension enabled.
Tracking
Serial number
Tracking dimension
Tracks individual units. Has separate flags for active in sales process and for blank receipt and issue.
Tracking
Owner
Tracking dimension
Used for consignment and customer-owned stock scenarios.
Group setting
Physical inventory
Dimension group flag
Defines whether the dimension is tracked for physical inventory.
Group setting
Financial inventory
Dimension group flag
Defines whether the dimension is tracked for financial inventory and costing.
Group setting
Blank receipt allowed
Dimension group flag
Allows receiving stock without a value for the dimension.
Group setting
Blank issue allowed
Dimension group flag
Allows issuing stock without a value for the dimension. Often a source of unexpected negative on-hand.
Group setting
Coverage plan by dimension
Dimension group flag
Master planning calculates requirements separately for each value of the dimension.
Group setting
Primary stocking
Dimension group flag
Marks the dimension as one where stock is held for pick location logic.
Group type
Product dimension group
Setup
Assigned to a product at release. Decides which product dimensions are active.
Group type
Storage dimension group
Setup
Assigned to a product at release. Decides which storage dimensions are active.
Group type
Tracking dimension group
Setup
Assigned to a product at release. Decides whether batch, serial and owner tracking apply.

Always confirm labels in your own environment, because Microsoft renames fields between releases. Dimension group assignments should be changed on a product only when no transactions exist, or through the supported process for the version you run.

Review your dimension group design

Send us your dimension group and item model group setup and we will review it for common planning and costing pitfalls.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use this reference

Search by dimension name or by a setting such as blank issue allowed to read what it controls. During design workshops, walk the three group types in order: product dimensions define the variant, storage dimensions define where stock sits, and tracking dimensions define lot or unit identity. Capture the choice per product type in your design document, because the dimension groups are assigned when a product is released to a legal entity and are hard to change afterwards.

  • Filter by Group to see only storage or tracking dimensions.
  • Use the Group setting rows as a checklist when you build a new dimension group.
  • Export to Excel and add a column for your decision per product family.

Why the groups matter

Every on-hand record, reservation and inventory transaction is keyed by the active dimensions. Site and warehouse are always part of the picture for stocked items, while location, batch and serial add granularity. Financial inventory settings influence costing and whether values roll up at site, warehouse or batch level. Physical settings influence where the system will allow reservation and picking. Getting this wrong early means negative on-hand, planning noise, or reports that cannot answer simple questions by warehouse.

Reading the group settings

Blank receipt allowed and blank issue allowed deserve extra attention. Allowing blank issue lets users post an issue before the receipt is recorded with its batch or location, which supports operational flexibility but can leave orphaned negative quantities. Coverage plan by dimension changes master planning behavior, because requirements are netted per dimension value instead of per item. Use it for dimensions where stock is not interchangeable, such as separate manufacturing sites with their own supply.

Common mistakes

Teams tend to activate every dimension for every product. This increases the key size of every inventory transaction and makes reservation more restrictive. Another frequent mistake is using one tracking dimension group for all items, which forces batch capture on items that never needed it.

  • Activating batch tracking for low value consumables.
  • Leaving blank issue allowed on for serial controlled assets.
  • Choosing financial inventory at warehouse level without agreeing the costing impact with finance.
  • Not documenting which dimension groups map to which item model group.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three dimension groups in D365 F&O?

They are the product dimension group, the storage dimension group and the tracking dimension group. Each product is assigned one of each when it is released to a legal entity, and together they decide which inventory dimensions are active for that product.

Can I change a dimension group after transactions exist?

Generally no. Once inventory transactions exist, the platform blocks most changes because existing records would no longer match the active dimensions. Plan the groups before go-live, and for changes use the supported migration steps documented for your release.

What does coverage plan by dimension do?

It tells master planning to calculate net requirements for each value of the dimension separately instead of combining them. It is useful when stock at different sites or configurations is not interchangeable, but it multiplies the number of planned orders.

Where do I set serial and batch tracking?

In the tracking dimension group, which you then assign to released products. The group has settings for batch number and serial number, including whether they are active, whether they apply in sales processes, and whether blank receipt or blank issue is allowed.
