Pressure Sensitive Label Web Width and Matrix Waste Calculator

Label material is usually the largest cost in a pressure sensitive job, and the matrix you throw away is part of it. This calculator turns label size, lanes across and gaps into web width, matrix waste, lineal feet and material cost per thousand labels.

Estimate for rectangular labels with straight lanes. Round or irregular labels use a different matrix. Material prices vary by face stock, adhesive and supplier contract.

Optional: a short review of how stock widths, material costs and waste history could feed label quotes automatically.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use it

Enter the finished label width and height, how many lanes you plan to run across, the gap between lanes and between labels in the feed direction, and the unprinted liner edge margin on each side. Add the order quantity, a press waste allowance and the laminate price per MSI. The tool returns the narrowest web width in eighth-inch steps, the repeat, matrix waste, lineal feet, MSI consumed and the cost per thousand labels. Try one to eight lanes and compare run time on the chart.

Formulas and units

Web width equals lanes times label width, plus lane gaps, plus two edge margins. Repeat equals label height plus the gap in the feed direction. Matrix waste percent equals one minus the label area per repeat divided by web width times repeat. Lineal feet equal labels divided by lanes, times repeat in inches over 12, grossed up for waste. MSI equals lineal feet times 12 times web width, divided by 1,000. Press time is lineal feet divided by feet per minute.

Worked example

A 4 by 6 inch label, three across, with 0.125 inch gaps and margins needs a 12.5 inch web, a 6.125 inch repeat and about 6 percent matrix waste. For 50,000 labels with 5 percent waste you run roughly 8,900 feet and consume about 1,340 MSI. At 0.45 dollars per MSI the material comes to about 12 dollars per thousand labels, and the press runs about an hour at 150 feet per minute.

Common mistakes

Estimators often forget the lane gap, quote on label area instead of web area, or ignore that the next available stock width may be wider than the calculated web. Waste also differs for first-time jobs and repeats, and that allowance should reflect makeready, registration and die-cut trimming rather than a flat guess.

  • Price material on the web consumed, not the label area
  • Check standard stock widths before choosing lane count
  • Add plate, die and finishing costs separately

Frequently Asked Questions

What is matrix waste in label converting?

Matrix is the waste web left after labels are die cut and stripped away. It includes gaps between lanes and labels plus the liner edges. Lower matrix means more of the purchased material ends up as sellable labels.

What is MSI?

MSI stands for thousand square inches. Label laminate is commonly priced per MSI, so multiplying the web width in inches by the length in inches and dividing by 1,000 gives the MSI consumed.

Why does the web width round up to 1/8 inch?

Stock rolls are slit to widths that are rarely perfectly equal to the layout. Rounding up to the next eighth inch gives a practical order width. Check your supplier for the actual standard widths.

Does this include roll diameter or labels per roll?

No. Use the label roll length and outer diameter calculator for finished roll specifications. This tool focuses on web layout, material consumed and cost.
