SAP_BASIS is the software component that carries the ABAP application server release; NetWeaver and ABAP Platform release names map to it. Kernel lines change over the life of a release through the downward-compatible kernel (DCK) policy, so the kernel column shows the lines commonly used, not a complete support matrix. Always confirm the allowed kernel for your exact SAP_BASIS release and SP in SAP Note 2083594 and the Product Availability Matrix (PAM) before patching.
Planning a 7.40 to 7.50 upgrade?
Send us your component list and kernel and we will return a reviewed list of checks for your upgrade path.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to check your NetWeaver and kernel version
In SAP GUI choose System > Status, then the component information button: the list shows SAP_BASIS, SAP_ABA and every other component with release and support package. The same data is in table CVERS (fields COMPONENT, RELEASE, EXTRELEASE). SPAM shows the package level per component. The kernel release and patch are on the System > Status screen under the kernel information, or at OS level as <sid>adm with disp+work -version in the kernel directory. Map SAP_BASIS to the release name with this table: 750 is NetWeaver 7.50, 757 is ABAP Platform 2022.
- System > Status > Component information: release and SP of SAP_BASIS
- SE16 on CVERS: same, scriptable
- SPAM > Package level: support package history
- disp+work -version: kernel release and patch level
What NetWeaver 7.50 means
SAP NetWeaver 7.50 is the release of the AS ABAP (SAP_BASIS 750) that SAP ECC 6.0 EHP8 and BW 7.50 run on, and the base of S/4HANA 1511. It is Unicode only, so any non-Unicode system must be converted before or during the upgrade. In 2020 SAP announced mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7 core applications and the underlying NetWeaver 7.5 until the end of 2027, with optional extended maintenance to the end of 2030. Later S/4HANA releases moved to ABAP Platform releases (1709 onwards) with SAP_BASIS 752 and higher.
Upgrading from 7.40 to 7.50
A 7.40 to 7.50 move is a release upgrade of SAP_BASIS, done with the Software Update Manager (SUM) using a stack XML generated in Maintenance Planner, not with SPAM. For an ECC system it is normally part of the EHP7 to EHP8 upgrade, because EHP8 requires NetWeaver 7.50. Plan the kernel: 7.50 needs a 7.45 or higher kernel line, and SUM switches it. Check database and OS support in PAM, Unicode status, custom code (SPAU and SPDD adjustments), and add-ons that must be compatible with SAP_BASIS 750. Run the upgrade in a sandbox copy first to measure downtime.
Version gotchas
SAP_BASIS support packages (SPAM) and kernel patches (SAPCAR and file exchange) are separate: a system can be on a current SP and an old kernel or the reverse. Downward-compatible kernels let older releases run newer kernel lines, but only for the combinations SAP lists in Note 2083594. NetWeaver 7.03 and 7.31 share the same ABAP stack, which confuses component lists. And S/4HANA release numbers, ABAP Platform release numbers and SAP_BASIS numbers differ, so always quote SAP_BASIS plus SP when asking for support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check the SAP NetWeaver version?
In SAP GUI go to System > Status and open component information. The SAP_BASIS release identifies the NetWeaver or ABAP Platform release, for example 740 is NetWeaver 7.40 and 750 is 7.50. You can also read table CVERS or SPAM package level.
What is SAP NetWeaver 7.5?
It is the NetWeaver release with SAP_BASIS 750, the platform for SAP ECC 6.0 EHP8 and BW 7.50. It is Unicode only. SAP announced mainstream maintenance to end 2027 with optional extended maintenance to end 2030; confirm current dates in the Product Availability Matrix.
How do I upgrade SAP NetWeaver from 7.4 to 7.5?
Use the Software Update Manager with a stack XML from Maintenance Planner. For ECC this is usually the upgrade to EHP8. Check Unicode, database and OS support in PAM, add-on compatibility and custom code adjustments, and rehearse on a copy to measure downtime.
How do I upgrade the SAP_BASIS component?
Support packages within a release are imported with SPAM (or SUM for stacks). Moving to a new SAP_BASIS release, for example 740 to 750, is a release upgrade done with SUM, normally driven by the product version upgrade calculated in Maintenance Planner.
