SAP Movement Types Reference (MM Inventory Management)

A movement type is a three digit key that tells SAP what a goods movement means: which stock it changes, which accounts it posts to, and which fields the screen asks for. This table lists the movement types SAP MM consultants and warehouse teams reach for most often.

Movement types are configured in table T156 (OMJJ). Customers copy and change standard types into the Z or 9xx range, so always confirm against your own system. Reversal types listed are the standard SAP pairing.

Check your movement type setup against standard

Send us your T156 export and we will list custom movement types with missing account determination. Optional, the table is free without it.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use this reference

Type a movement type number, a word such as scrap or cost center, or an area such as Transfer into the search box to filter the table. Use the Reversal type column to find the correct cancellation posting, because a reversal in SAP is its own movement type and posts with its own account determination. Export the filtered rows to Excel when you need to paste them into a blueprint, a test script or a training sheet.

How movement types drive posting

Each movement type controls three things. First, quantity update: whether stock rises or falls, and in which stock category such as unrestricted, quality inspection or blocked. Second, value update: whether the posting changes inventory value. Third, the posting keys used with transaction key GBB, BSX or WRX in account determination (OBYC), which together with valuation class decide the G/L accounts. Because of this, one wrong movement type does not only move quantity, it can post value to the wrong cost account.

  • Movement type plus movement indicator decides the allowed reference document
  • Reversal movement types carry the same account determination in the opposite direction
  • Consumption movement types need an account assignment such as cost center, order or WBS

Worked example: a production issue and its correction

A production operator pulls 40 units of a component to process order 1000231. The posting is 261, goods issue for order. If the operator picked the wrong order, the supervisor posts 262 with reference to the original material document, and then repeats the 261 against the right order. Do not use 201 to fix this, because 201 expects a cost center and would book the consumption as an expense instead of work in process. The same logic applies to goods receipts: 101 is cancelled by 102, not by a return delivery 122.

Common mistakes

The most frequent error is using a transfer posting where a goods issue is meant, for example moving scrap with 311 instead of 551, which leaves stock on the books. Another is cancelling a goods receipt that already has an invoice, which fails or leaves a GR/IR imbalance. Third, copying a standard movement type without copying its account modification rows in OMWN and OBYC, which causes posting errors that look like missing G/L accounts. Always test a new or changed movement type with a value impact check in MB51 and the accounting document.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between movement type 101 and 103 in SAP?

101 receives goods into unrestricted stock and normally updates inventory value and GR/IR. 103 receives into GR blocked stock, which is valued but not available, so a quality or quantity check can happen first. Stock is then released with 105 to move it to its final stock category.

How do I reverse a movement type in SAP?

In MIGO choose the cancellation action and reference the original material document, or use the paired reversal movement type from this table. The system posts the opposite quantity and value. A document that was already invoiced or consumed may need a return delivery or a different correction.

Where are movement types configured?

Movement types sit in table T156 and are maintained with transaction OMJJ in the customizing path for Inventory Management and Physical Inventory. Account determination for them is in OBYC, and field selection in OMJJ screens. Never edit the standard types, copy them to a customer name first.

Which movement type is used for backflush in production?

Backflush of components at confirmation posts 261, goods issue for order, and the receipt of the finished product is 101 against the production order. Cancelling a confirmation posts the matching 262 and 102. Make sure the backflush indicator is set in the material master or work center.

If your team spends time explaining or looking up movement types, we can put a read-only assistant on top of your own T156 configuration and material documents so planners ask in plain language and see the query behind the answer.
