Tally to ERP Migration Assessment
Tally Prime is excellent for accounting and light inventory, and many Indian manufacturers run on it for years. This assessment scores the signals that usually mean it is time to look at an ERP: users, locations, production complexity, reporting effort, controls and data risk.
1. How many people post or approve transactions in Tally?
2. How many plants, branches or godowns do you run?
3. How complex is your production?
4. How much of your reporting is rebuilt in Excel each month?
5. Do you need approvals and workflow for purchase, sales or expenses?
6. How well do your other tools (CRM, e-commerce, payroll, GST portals) connect to Tally?
7. How do you track inventory accuracy?
8. Are customers or lenders asking for audit trail, controls or integrations you cannot show?
9. How is your company data stored and shared?
10. Do you have an owner for the project and budget for implementation and training?
How to use the assessment
Answer the ten questions as your business is today, not as you hope it will be. Ideally have the finance head and the production or stores head answer together, because they often disagree about how well the books reflect the floor. Your score maps to one of four bands, each with next steps you can put into a plan.
What the questions measure
The questions cover headcount and locations, production complexity, reporting effort, workflow and controls, integration, inventory accuracy, external pressure from customers or lenders, data safety and readiness to run a project. High scores in several areas together matter more than a single high score.
- Scale: users, plants and godowns
- Process depth: BOM, routings, subcontracting
- Control: approvals, audit trail, role based access
- Risk: data loss, manual rekeying, unreliable stock
Choosing a destination
Indian SMEs usually look at SAP Business One, Zoho, Odoo, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, NetSuite or Indian manufacturing ERPs. Fit depends on production complexity, GST and e-invoicing support, partner availability in your city and budget. This tool does not recommend a product. It tells you whether it is time to start looking.
Common mistakes
Companies often migrate years of transactions when opening balances and masters would do, underestimate training, or try to copy Tally voucher habits into the new system. Others delay until a crisis, such as a failed audit or lost data, and then have no time to select properly. Treat migration as a process change, not a data copy.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I move from Tally to an ERP?
Consider it when you have several locations, multi-level production, heavy Excel reporting, weak controls or repeated stock mismatches. One signal alone is rarely enough. A pattern across several is the real trigger.
Can Tally data be migrated to another ERP?
Yes. Masters and opening balances can be exported to Excel or XML and loaded into the target system. Full transaction history is usually kept as an archive or loaded selectively, since mapping every voucher is costly.
How long does a Tally to ERP migration take?
For a small company it can take two to four months, and for multi-plant manufacturers six months or more. Data clean up, process design, training and parallel runs take longer than the technical load.
Do I need to stop using Tally after moving?
Not immediately. Many firms keep Tally read-only for historical reference for a year or more. Decide this with your auditor and keep reliable backups of the archived data.
