Short answer
In Business Central, the Inventory Valuation - WIP report shows the value of unfinished production orders, and the amount in the general ledger comes from posted consumption, capacity and output through the WIP account in the inventory posting setup. Make-or-buy is set per item with Replenishment System (Prod. Order or Purchase) and Manufacturing Policy.
Applies to: Dynamics 365 Business Central, online and on-premises, with Manufacturing (Premium or Essentials for production orders). Report names can differ slightly by version.
Run the WIP report and set make or buy
- 1Search for Inventory Valuation - WIP and open the report; set the starting and ending dates and run it for the period to be reconciled.
- 2Run Adjust Cost - Item Entries first so consumption and output costs are correct, then run Post Inventory Cost to G/L if your setup does not post automatically.
- 3Compare the report total to the WIP account in the general ledger; differences point to unadjusted costs, manual journal entries or timing.
- 4For make-or-buy, open the Item Card and set Replenishment System to Prod. Order for make or Purchase for buy.
- 5Set Manufacturing Policy to Make-to-Stock or Make-to-Order, and set the production BOM number on the item for items that are made.
- 6Run the Planning Worksheet or Requisition Worksheet and Calculate Regenerative Plan; planned orders then follow the chosen replenishment system.
- 7Use stockkeeping units if make-or-buy differs by location, for example make at one plant and buy at another.
How WIP builds up and clears
When you post consumption of components to a released production order and run capacity (labor and machine time), the cost sits in work in progress. Posting output moves the finished item cost out of WIP into inventory. Whatever is left on open production orders is the WIP balance.
The WIP account is set in the inventory posting setup, and costs reach the general ledger through the cost posting routines. If the costing method is Standard, variances are calculated when the order is finished.
Reports to know
Inventory Valuation - WIP reports the WIP value by production order. The production order statistics page shows expected and actual cost on a single order. For period reconciliation use the WIP report together with the general ledger entries for the WIP account.
Make sure you finish production orders that are physically done. Open orders with no activity inflate WIP and are a common source of reconciliation differences.
Make or buy in practice
Replenishment System decides how the planning engine fills a demand: with a production order or with a purchase order. Manufacturing Policy decides whether production is anticipated (stock) or triggered by a demand (order). Combine them carefully; an item with Purchase replenishment and a production BOM will not generate production orders.
For a true make-or-buy decision, compare the roll-up cost of the production BOM and routing with the vendor price, and include capacity availability.

Common pitfalls
- !Running the WIP report before Adjust Cost, which understates or mis-states cost.
- !Leaving finished production orders in Released status, so WIP never clears.
- !Setting Replenishment System to Purchase but expecting production orders.
- !Not reconciling WIP to the general ledger every period.
How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this
An assistant grounded in your Business Central data can list production orders with WIP value and no activity, flag items where the replenishment setting conflicts with a production BOM, and show the query it used. It is read-only. Netray can run it against an on-prem database.
Frequently asked questions
Which report shows production WIP in Business Central?
Inventory Valuation - WIP. Run it after Adjust Cost - Item Entries, and reconcile the result with the WIP account in the general ledger.
How do I set make or buy for an item?
On the Item Card set Replenishment System to Prod. Order to make or Purchase to buy, and for made items set the production BOM and Manufacturing Policy.
Why does my WIP not match the general ledger?
Usual causes are costs not yet adjusted or posted to the general ledger, manual journal entries on the WIP account, or finished orders still open. Run the cost routines and then compare again.

Business Central: "You have insufficient quantity of Item on inventory"
Business Central raises this error when posting would take an item negative and Prevent Negative Inventory is switched on, either globally in Inventory Setup or on the item card. The usual root causes are a different location or variant than you expect, an earlier posting date, receipts not yet posted, or lot or serial numbers that are not available. Check the item ledger for the exact combination before changing the setting.
How-toCreating and selecting custom report layouts in Business Central
Business Central reports can render through a Word layout (simple, single-level documents like invoices) or an RDLC layout (complex, multi-level, grouped reports). Custom layouts are uploaded and assigned per report through the Report Layout Selection page, or shipped inside an AL extension with the rendering(...) property.
How-toUpgrade Business Central 14 to 27: Path, Work and Release Updates
You cannot jump from Business Central 14 straight to 27 in one move; Microsoft's supported upgrade paths go through intermediate versions, and the real work is converting C/AL customizations to AL extensions before the first step. Check the current upgrade documentation for the exact path, run the upgrade in a copy, and treat it as a project, not a patch.
Error fixFixing "Cannot create a record in (table). The record already exists" in D365 F&SCM data entity imports
This is the standard kernel duplicate-key exception, thrown when the Data Management Framework tries to insert a staging row into a target table whose unique or alternate key already matches an existing record. It almost always means the entity's insert-vs-update logic did not recognize the target row as an update, not that you have a true accidental duplicate in your source file.
Error fixFixing "There are currently no batch servers available for processing" in D365 F&SCM
This message means the batch framework cannot find any AOS instance flagged as a batch server and available for the batch group the job is assigned to. The fix is almost always in server configuration (System administration > Servers) or batch group assignment, not in the batch job itself.
Error fixFixing "You do not have the following permissions on TableData (table): (permission)" in Business Central AL
This runtime error means the current user's assigned permission sets do not grant the required Insert, Modify, Delete, Read, or Execute right on that specific table. It is most common right after installing or updating a custom AL extension, because Business Central checks object-level permissions even for tables an extension owns.
