Query Business Central in plain English
Ask for a short review of how your Business Central data could be queried read-only by an AI assistant.
Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use this list
Type part of a table name, a number or an area such as Manufacturing into the search box. The result tells you the base table number, the name as it appears in AL and C/AL, and what rows in it mean. Use the number when you open the Table Information page (search for it in Business Central) to see record counts and size, or when you write a Data Upgrade, an ODBC query on an on-premises database, or an AL table extension.
- Search by number to confirm a table you saw in an error message
- Filter by area to review all the ledger entry tables for a close
- Export the full list to Excel for a project wiki
Ledger entries versus documents
Business Central keeps open work in document tables (Sales Header, Purchase Line, Production Order) and records history in ledger entry tables (G/L Entry, Item Ledger Entry, Value Entry). Posted documents also live in their own tables (Sales Invoice Header). A report that needs quantities should read the item ledger entry, while a report that needs cost should read the value entry, because quantity and value are separate by design.
- Item Ledger Entry holds quantity, Value Entry holds cost and sales amount
- Detailed ledger tables hold applications and adjustments
- Production Order is one table for all statuses, separated by the Status field
Manufacturing tables in the 99000000 range
Routings, production BOMs, work centers and machine centers use table numbers starting at 99000000, a historical range from the original manufacturing add-on that is now part of the base application. Production orders themselves sit in the 5400 range. When you move from NAV to Business Central, these numbers are normally unchanged, which makes mapping simple, but check any custom fields added to them.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is writing SQL directly against a table whose name includes the company prefix and extension suffixes on-premises. In SQL the physical name is the company name plus the table name, and extension fields live in a separate extension table. Another mistake is reading Sales Line without the Document Type filter and mixing quotes with invoices. Finally, do not write directly to ledger entry tables, always post through journals or codeunits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Business Central table numbers the same as NAV table numbers?
For the base application, yes. Tables such as G/L Entry 17, Customer 18 and Item 27 kept their numbers from NAV through Business Central. Newer tables were added over time, and custom tables in your own range remain yours, so always check your own extensions.
Where do I find the table number inside Business Central?
Open the Table Information page by searching for it, or use the All Objects page. In a developer session you can also press Ctrl+Alt+F1 on a page to open the About This Page view, which shows the source table and its number.
Why are quantity and cost in different tables?
Item Ledger Entry records the physical movement of quantity, while Value Entry records the cost and sales value that can change later through cost adjustment. Splitting them lets the system revalue inventory without changing quantity history.
Can I edit these tables directly?
You should not. Ledger entry tables are written by posting routines that also update related entries, applications and dimensions. Editing rows with SQL or a data tool breaks that consistency and is unsupported in Business Central online.
If you need answers from these tables without writing queries, we can connect a read-only natural-language layer to your Business Central data, on-premises if required.
