What Is a Planning Cluster in Infor LN?

Question
infor ln planning cluster

  • what is a planning cluster in infor ln

  • infor ln enterprise planning cluster setup

Short answer

In Infor LN Enterprise Planning, a cluster groups planning entities, such as plants or warehouses, so that planning can be run, viewed and controlled as one unit. It is a structural setting that determines what is planned together, which is why a wrong cluster setup produces missing or surprising planned orders.

Applies to: Infor LN 10.x with Enterprise Planning. Session names and some terms vary by version and by whether Service planning is also in use.

Set up and verify a planning cluster

  1. 1Decide the planning scope: which plants, warehouses and items should be planned together and which independently.
  2. 2Define the cluster in Enterprise Planning master data and assign the planning units to it.
  3. 3Check items are assigned to planning in that cluster, with the right planning parameters such as order policy and lead times.
  4. 4Define supply and demand relationships between entities, for example which plant supplies which warehouse.
  5. 5Run a planning pass for a small item set and review planned orders, messages and exceptions.
  6. 6Compare results with expectations. If demand in one entity is not covered, check whether it belongs to the cluster and its supply relationships.
  7. 7Roll the setup out to the rest of the items, with a planner review of the first full run.

What a cluster is for

Planning needs a boundary. Without one, a single plan could span your entire company, and you could not run or schedule parts of it independently. A cluster is that boundary: it defines the set of entities whose supply and demand are netted and planned in one run.

Bigger clusters give a more global optimum but longer runs and more cross-site dependency. Smaller clusters run faster and isolate problems but require explicit transfers between them.

Cluster design choices

Group by how material really moves. Plants that share components and exchange goods belong together. Sites that operate as separate businesses with arm's-length supply often do not. Also consider who owns the plan: one planner team per cluster is easier to run than shared ownership.

Review the cluster design whenever you open a warehouse, change a sourcing route or merge businesses.

Service resource planning

Searches for an LN service resource planning session relate to planning service work, such as technicians and equipment, against service orders and calendars. It is a separate planning area from item planning, with its own resources and horizons, though it may use shared calendar and organisation data.

Use the Service module documentation for your version to find the exact sessions. Do not assume item-planning cluster settings apply to service resources.

Planning sanity checklist
- Every demand entity is in a cluster
- Every item has planning data in that cluster
- Supply relationships defined for cross-entity sourcing
- Calendars and lead times present
- First run reviewed by a planner

Common pitfalls

  • !Leaving a warehouse outside any cluster, so its demand is never planned.
  • !One giant cluster that makes every planning run slow and fragile.
  • !Missing supply relationships between plants, producing unmet demand messages.
  • !Changing cluster membership with open planned orders and not re-running the plan.
  • !Confusing item planning clusters with service resource planning.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

Planners lose time asking why an item was or was not planned. A private assistant over your LN planning data can explain, read-only, which cluster the item sits in, what demand and supply it saw and why no order was proposed, with all data staying on your servers. Planners keep decision authority.

Frequently asked questions

What is a planning cluster in Infor LN?

It is a grouping of planning entities in Enterprise Planning, such as plants and warehouses, that are planned together in one run. It sets the boundary within which supply and demand are netted.

How do I create a planning cluster?

Define the cluster in Enterprise Planning master data, assign planning units to it, set item planning data and supply relationships, then run a limited planning pass to verify. Check session names against your LN version.

Why is my demand not planned in LN?

Check that the demanding entity belongs to a cluster, the item has planning data there and supply relationships exist for sourcing. Missing membership is a frequent cause.

Is service resource planning the same as item planning?

No. Service resource planning schedules technicians and equipment for service work, while item planning nets supply and demand for materials. They are separate areas with different settings.

How-to

Infor LN Enterprise Planning Not Generating Planned Orders

When an item has demand but Enterprise Planning creates no planned orders, the cause is almost always planning master data: the item is not set to be planned, the planning horizon or time fences exclude the demand, the order policy or supply source is missing, or the planning run did not include the item. Check them in that order before suspecting the engine.

How to diagnose and fix a slow Infor LN session

A slow Infor LN session is usually caused by an unindexed or overly broad database query, unarchived data bloating a transaction table, or resource pressure on the Java application tier, and occasionally by a recently added custom DAL2 handler. The fix starts with isolating which tier the delay is actually in rather than guessing at a solution.

Error fix

Troubleshooting SyteLine MRP and APS regeneration that fails or hangs

A SyteLine MRP or APS run that fails to complete, hangs indefinitely, or errors partway through is most often caused by data integrity problems (a BOM loop, an item with an invalid lead time or missing routing), a scheduling engine (APS) process that is stuck or resource-starved, or a concurrent MRP run conflict. Check the MRP/APS log first for the specific item or job it stopped on before assuming it is a system capacity issue.

Error fix

Infor LN bshell Process Stuck at 100% CPU: How to Diagnose and Fix It

A bshell process pinned at 100% CPU on the Infor LN application server almost always means one session is stuck in a 4GL loop, scanning an unindexed table, or waiting on a database lock. End the session from the Sessions Monitor first, then kill the OS process only if that fails, and check for a blocking database transaction before assuming it is a bug.

Error fix

Infor LN Not Authorized to Run This Session: How to Fix It

Infor LN refuses to open a session with a not authorized message when the logged-in user's assigned role does not include that session, or when the session is blocked for the company they are logged into. Grant the session through Common > Authorization Management > Roles, or check the user's role and company context, and the session opens on retry. In most cases this is a permissions configuration issue, not a bug.

Error fix

Infor LN DAL Out of Sync After a Custom Field: Cause and Fix

Infor LN throws a DAL, or table, out of sync error, or simply drops a new custom field silently, when a table's dictionary definition is changed but the generated DAL and dependent forms are not regenerated afterward. Running the standard sequence, table compile, DAL generation, then session/form compile, in Tools > Development after every dictionary change resolves it. Skipping any one of the three steps is what causes the mismatch.
