Segment Reporting in Infor LN: Financials Setup

Question
segment reporting infor ln

Also searched as

  • infor ln segment reporting setup
  • infor ln operating segments dimensions
  • infor ln financial reporting by segment

Short answer

Infor LN has no single switch for segment reporting. You build it from the financial structure: choose the segment definition (business unit, product line or region), carry it as a dimension or on the chart of accounts, map it to ledger postings, and report with the financial report writer or standard financial statements. Define the segments with your accountants first, since the design drives everything else.

Applies to: Infor LN 10.x General Ledger; session names vary by version and by how your company structure is set up

How to set up segment reporting

  1. 1Agree the segment definition with finance and auditors: what is a segment, and how profit, assets and liabilities are attributed to it.
  2. 2Decide how LN will carry the segment: as a dimension (analysis) on ledger postings, or through company structure and ledger accounts.
  3. 3Set up the dimension type and its values, and make it mandatory on the accounts and transactions where segment attribution is needed.
  4. 4Make sure subledger and logistics postings pass the dimension through, using the integration mapping and defaults.
  5. 5Define financial reports that group balances and results by the segment dimension, with comparison and total lines.
  6. 6Run a trial close, reconcile segment totals to the consolidated ledger, and investigate unassigned amounts.
  7. 7Document the allocation rules for shared costs and keep them stable between periods.

Choosing how to carry the segment

The most flexible method is a dimension on postings, because the same ledger account can be analysed by segment without multiplying accounts. Alternatively, separate companies or separate ledger accounts per segment suit organisations that already run a legal entity per segment.

Pick one approach and apply it consistently. Mixing methods makes reconciliation hard and leads to segments that do not add up to the total.

Making attribution complete

Reports are only as good as the dimension coverage. If some postings reach the ledger without a segment, they show up as unassigned. Close the gaps by setting defaults on items, customers, warehouses or cost centres so the dimension is filled automatically.

For costs shared between segments, define allocation rules (percentages or drivers) and run them as a regular period-end step, so results do not depend on manual journals.

Reporting and validation

Build the report so each segment, the unallocated line and the total are visible. The sum of segments plus unallocated must equal the consolidated figure, which is the main control to run each period.

For external reporting standards such as IFRS 8 or ASC 280, your accountants decide what must be disclosed. LN supplies the data structure, not the disclosure judgement.

Common pitfalls

  • !Starting setup before the segment definition is agreed with finance.
  • !Leaving the dimension optional, which creates unassigned postings.
  • !Mixing dimensions and separate accounts to represent the same segment.
  • !Changing allocation rules between periods without documenting it.

How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this

Netray adds a private AI layer on top of the Infor LN you already run, including on-prem installs. ERPray answers questions in plain language over LN data read-only, shows the query it ran and respects LN roles, so a consultant can ask the question instead of hunting for the session. The model runs on your own GPUs, nothing leaves your network, and any write-back needs a human approval. Cloud-hosted LN works too, but the design is tuned for on-prem and air-gapped sites. For pure navigation questions, LN's own session search and help are often enough.

Frequently asked questions

Does Infor LN have a built-in segment report?

Not as a single switch. You assemble it from dimensions, ledger mapping and financial reports, and the exact sessions depend on your version and setup.

Should I use dimensions or separate companies?

Dimensions are more flexible and cheaper to maintain. Separate companies make sense when each segment is already a separate legal entity.

How do I deal with shared costs?

Define allocation rules by driver or percentage and run them as a period-end step so the results are repeatable.

How do I check the report is complete?

Segments plus the unassigned line must equal the consolidated total. Any unassigned amount points to missing dimension defaults.

Infor LN Cost Peg Transfer: How It Works and How to Reconcile It

In Infor LN, pegging links supply and demand so cost incurred on a supply order (production, purchase, warehouse) can be charged to the project, element or activity it was created for. A cost peg transfer moves that pegged cost into project actuals, and it only works when the pegging, the project structure and the cost-component setup are correct before the run.

How-to

Additional cost setup in Infor LN, including machine cost

In Infor LN, costs beyond material are built from cost components, operation rates (labor and machine) and surcharges. You define the components, set rates on work centers and machines, attach additional costs through surcharges or cost components on items and orders, and then run the cost price calculation so the values flow into item cost and order cost.

Infor LN Item Group: Setup and Maintenance

An item group in Infor LN classifies items so that defaults, accounting and reporting can be applied by group instead of item by item. You maintain them in the Item Groups session (tcmcs023m000 in common data) and assign each item to one group in the item base data. Plan the group structure before loading items, because changing it later affects accounting defaults and history.

Infor LN Planned Cost and Pegged Transfer Explained

In Infor LN, a pegged order is a supply order linked to a specific demand such as a project or sales order. Planned cost is the expected cost of that supply, and when the supply completes its actual cost is passed to the demand it is pegged to. If the peg is broken or the cost is stated differently on each side, the demand order shows wrong cost and margin.

Error fix

Infor LN bshell Process Stuck at 100% CPU: How to Diagnose and Fix It

A bshell process pinned at 100% CPU on the Infor LN application server almost always means one session is stuck in a 4GL loop, scanning an unindexed table, or waiting on a database lock. End the session from the Sessions Monitor first, then kill the OS process only if that fails, and check for a blocking database transaction before assuming it is a bug.

Error fix

Infor LN Not Authorized to Run This Session: How to Fix It

Infor LN refuses to open a session with a not authorized message when the logged-in user's assigned role does not include that session, or when the session is blocked for the company they are logged into. Grant the session through Common > Authorization Management > Roles, or check the user's role and company context, and the session opens on retry. In most cases this is a permissions configuration issue, not a bug.
