NetSuite MRP Not Generating Planned Orders: Causes and Fixes
NetSuite MRP not generating planned orders
Also searched as
- NetSuite supply planning no planned orders
- NetSuite generate planned orders returns nothing
- NetSuite item supply plan empty
- NetSuite planned orders wrong quantity or date
Short answer
When NetSuite Generate Planned Orders returns nothing, the cause is nearly always item setup or demand: the item is not set for supply planning, demand falls outside the planning time fence, existing supply already covers it, or the lead time and lot size settings prevent a suggested order. Check the item's Planning fields first, then the demand source, then the plan itself.
Applies to: NetSuite with the Material Requirements Planning (Demand Planning and Supply Planning) feature enabled; items set to time-phased replenishment
How to diagnose missing planned orders
- 1Confirm the features: Setup > Company > Enable Features > Items & Inventory should have Demand Planning and Material Requirements Planning (supply planning) enabled.
- 2Open the item record and check the Planning subtab: the supply replenishment method must be time-phased, and the item must not be excluded from planning.
- 3Check lead time, safety stock, lot sizing method and any fixed lot size or multiple. A missing lead time or a lot size larger than the demand horizon can hide orders.
- 4Check the demand time fence and planning time fence. Demand inside the demand time fence may be ignored, and orders inside the planning time fence are not auto-created.
- 5Review demand: sales orders, work order component demand, and the item demand plan. Verify the requested ship date, the location, and that the transaction is approved and not closed.
- 6Review supply already on order: open purchase orders, work orders and firmed planned orders may already cover the demand and the date.
- 7Verify location settings: items planned per location need planning fields and a replenishment source for each location.
- 8Run Generate Planned Orders again from the Supply Planning menu and open the item supply plan to read the time-phased netting line by line.
- 9Firm and release the planned orders into purchase orders or work orders once they look right.
How the netting works
Time-phased planning nets demand against supply by date. For each item and location NetSuite takes the demand (sales orders, dependent demand from work orders, the demand plan), subtracts on-hand and scheduled receipts, and when the projected balance falls below safety stock, it suggests a planned order. The suggested date is back-scheduled by lead time.
That mechanism explains most empty results. If on-hand is large, if a purchase order already lands before the need date, or if the demand is dated after the planning horizon, there is simply nothing to plan. Before assuming a defect, read the item supply plan view for one item and trace the arithmetic by hand.
Item fields that suppress planning
The Planning subtab of the item record controls almost everything. Items set to reorder point rather than time-phased are handled by Order Items, not Generate Planned Orders. An item with the wrong supply type, for example bought versus built, may produce orders of the type you did not expect. A blank lead time means supply is assumed immediate, which can collapse the plan.
Lot sizing matters too. A fixed lot size plan creates orders in multiples, so demand of 40 against a fixed lot of 500 yields one order of 500 or none depending on the horizon. Lot-for-lot creates exact orders. Check this before changing anything else.
-- SuiteQL: items flagged for time-phased planning with no lead time SELECT i.itemid, i.leadtime, i.safetystock FROM item i WHERE i.isinactive = 'F' AND (i.leadtime IS NULL OR i.leadtime = 0)
Time fences and the horizon
The demand time fence sets how many days out firm demand is trusted, and the planning time fence sets how many days out the system will not create new planned orders. Inside the planning time fence NetSuite expects planners to act manually. That is intentional, since moving a purchase order two days out is rarely something to automate.
The planning horizon is also finite. Demand dated beyond the horizon is not netted, so a long lead item whose demand sits far out may show no order until the horizon rolls forward. If your lead times are long, check the planning horizon preference before suspecting data.
Firming and releasing
Planned orders are suggestions. Firm them to protect them from being recalculated, then release them to create the purchase order or work order. If you regenerate without firming, the plan is rebuilt and your edits are lost. Firmed orders still count as supply in later netting, which is also why a stale firmed order can quietly stop new ones appearing.
After release, the real transactions appear in the supply side, and the planned order is consumed. If a released order is later cancelled, regenerate so the demand reappears.
Common pitfalls
- !Expecting reorder point items to appear in Generate Planned Orders: they use Order Items instead.
- !Leaving lead time blank so supply looks instantly available.
- !Not firming orders before regenerating, which discards planner edits.
- !Stale firmed planned orders that keep counting as supply and block new suggestions.
- !Testing with a location that has no planning fields, while the item is planned per location.
How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this
A grounded assistant on NetSuite can pull the item's planning fields, open demand and supply lines, and walk the netting arithmetic for one item, explaining why no order was suggested. ERPray shows the query it ran and stays read-only, so the planner still firms and releases. For simple reorder-point replenishment, NetSuite's own Order Items screen is usually enough without any AI layer.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Generate Planned Orders finish with no results?
Usually because supply already covers demand, the demand is outside the horizon or inside a time fence, or the item is not set for time-phased planning. Open the item supply plan for one known item and read the netting to see which applies.
What is the difference between Order Items and planned orders?
Order Items works from reorder point and preferred stock level and creates purchase or work orders directly. Planned orders come from time-phased supply planning, which nets dated demand and supply and proposes orders you firm and release.
Do planned orders consider component demand?
Yes for items on a bill of materials: planned or actual work orders create dependent demand for components, which then drives their own planned orders. Make sure components are also set up for planning, or they will not show suggestions.
Can I rerun planning without losing my edits?
Firm the planned orders you want to keep before regenerating. Unfirmed suggestions are rebuilt from scratch, so manual quantity or date changes on them are lost.

How to Set Up Routings and WIP in NetSuite Manufacturing
In NetSuite Advanced Manufacturing, a routing defines the ordered operations, work centers and labor or machine resources an assembly passes through. When a work order with a routing is released, NetSuite creates manufacturing operation tasks, and costs move into WIP through work order issues and operation completions before the final work order completion relieves WIP into finished inventory.
How-toHow to create an assembly build or work order in NetSuite
For simple manufacturing with no routing or WIP tracking, use Transactions > Manufacturing > Build Assemblies (or Enter Assembly Build), select the assembly item, quantity, and location, and NetSuite consumes the BOM components and receives the finished item in one transaction. For multi-step production needing routing, WIP accounting or partial completions, create a Work Order (Transactions > Manufacturing > Work Orders) and process it through Work Order Completion, which requires the Advanced Manufacturing feature (SuiteSuccess Manufacturing or WMS add-on) or the Manufacturing bundle.
How-toNetSuite Outsourced Manufacturing: Subcontract Work Order Flow
NetSuite outsourced manufacturing lets you buy a finished or processed assembly from a vendor while supplying the components yourself. A purchase order drives a linked work order, components are sent to the vendor, and the item receipt brings in the assembly with component cost plus the vendor charge. It works well once the item, vendor charge and component location are set correctly.
How-toHow to write and run SuiteQL queries in NetSuite
SuiteQL is NetSuite's read-only SQL dialect over the underlying record tables, run either interactively from Analytics > SuiteQL Query Tool (or the older /app/suiteanalytics query page), through REST at /services/rest/query/v1/suiteql, or programmatically via the N/query module in SuiteScript 2.x. It supports standard SELECT, JOIN, WHERE, GROUP BY and window functions against table names that mostly match record type IDs (transaction, transactionline, item, customer).
Error fixFix NetSuite SSS_USAGE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED Error
SSS_USAGE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED fires when a SuiteScript execution consumes all the governance units (usage points) allotted to its script type before it finishes. Fix it by checking runtime.getCurrentScript().getRemainingUsage() before expensive calls, yielding or rescheduling in Scheduled scripts, and moving heavy record-count work into Map/Reduce, which yields automatically across stages.
Error fixFix NetSuite INVALID_FLD_VALUE Error
INVALID_FLD_VALUE means NetSuite rejected a value you tried to set on a field because it does not match the field's expected type, list option, or reference record. Fix it by confirming the internal ID or text value actually exists on that field's source list and matches the field's value type (text versus list versus record reference) before setting it.
