AS9100 is the quality management system standard for the aviation, space, and defense industry, published by SAE and the International Aerospace Quality Group, which incorporates all of ISO 9001 and adds sector-specific requirements for safety, configuration, and risk.
AS9100 Explained
AS9100 is the aerospace industry's answer to a supply chain problem: ISO 9001 is generic by design, and aerospace primes needed a common, auditable baseline that addressed the specific failure modes of flight hardware. The standard is maintained by the International Aerospace Quality Group and published regionally as AS9100 in the Americas, EN 9100 in Europe, and JISQ 9100 in Japan, with the technical content harmonized so a single certification is recognized globally.
The current revision, AS9100D, was published in 2016 and aligns with ISO 9001:2015, adopting the Annex SL high-level structure and the clause numbering from 4 through 10. Every ISO 9001 requirement is present verbatim, with aerospace additions inserted in place. The additions cover configuration management, product safety, prevention of counterfeit parts, awareness of individual contribution to product safety and ethical behavior, risk management applied to operational processes, special requirements and critical items, first article inspection, product realization planning, and control of work transfer.
Two additions cause the most audit friction. Configuration management requires an organization to know, at any point, exactly which drawing revision, specification, and process a given serialized unit was built to - and to demonstrate control over changes to that configuration. Special requirements and critical items require the organization to identify characteristics whose variation significantly affects safety, fit, form, function, or producibility, and to apply specific controls to them. Both requirements push directly into ERP: item revision control, effectivity dating, routing revision, and inspection plan linkage.
Certification is performed by a certification body accredited under the IAQG scheme, and the resulting certificate is registered in the OASIS database, the industry-wide registry primes use to verify supplier status. Auditors are trained and approved specifically for the aerospace scheme, and audits are scored using a defined methodology with mandatory audit days based on organization size and complexity. A finding cannot simply be closed with a promise; the scheme requires root cause analysis and evidence of effective corrective action within defined timeframes.

The fix is enforcing revision on the purchase order line, on the inspection record, and on the work order traveler, so that a mismatch is visible before parts move rather than during a customer audit.
