What Is Oracle EBS Concurrent Program?
Also known as: concurrent request, EBS concurrent manager, Oracle E-Business Suite concurrent processing
Definition
An Oracle E-Business Suite concurrent program is an executable batch process, such as a report, interface or data load, defined in the application and run by concurrent managers. Users submit it as a concurrent request with parameters and view status and output.
Oracle EBS Concurrent Program Explained
In Oracle EBS, almost all batch work runs as concurrent programs. Each program is registered under System Administrator > Concurrent > Program > Define, pointing to an executable such as PL/SQL, Oracle Reports, SQL*Loader, Java or host script, and listing its parameters and output format. Users submit it from the Submit Request screen as a concurrent request.
Concurrent managers pick up requests from queues. The Internal Concurrent Manager controls other managers such as the Standard Manager, and administrators define work shifts, specialization rules and queue sizes. Requests move through Pending, Running and Completed phases, with statuses such as Normal, Warning or Error, and logs and output are viewable from the Requests window.
Request sets chain programs in stages, and incompatibility rules stop conflicting programs from running at the same time. Familiar examples are Autocreate Requisitions, MRP planning programs, Cost Manager and Create Accounting. Common issues include long-pending requests due to undersized managers, locking, and requests left running after session failure, all handled through monitoring and purge programs.
Why It Matters
- Month-end and planning cycles depend on concurrent request chains, so a failure can delay close.
- Tuning manager queues and incompatibilities directly affects batch window length.
- Custom concurrent programs are a major part of EBS customization and must be inventoried before any migration to Fusion Cloud.
- Status and logs provide the audit trail for batch changes.
In Practice
A cost accountant submits Cost Manager transactions and Create Accounting for a plant. Both are in a request set that runs nightly. When a stuck Standard Manager queue leaves the set pending for hours, the administrator increases processes for the manager, adds an incompatibility to avoid overlap with a heavy inventory program, and sets up a purge for old request logs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a concurrent manager?
It is a process that reads the request queue and runs programs. The Internal Concurrent Manager supervises the others.
What is a request set?
A request set groups programs into stages that run in sequence or parallel, submitted as a single request.
Why is a request stuck on Pending?
Common causes are a down or undersized manager, an incompatible program already running, or a scheduled start time in the future.
