UN/LOCODE codes identify locations and may cover several terminals. Confirm the exact terminal, customs district and any consolidation rules with your forwarder before issuing a PO or booking. Check the current UN/LOCODE release for changes.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.
How to use the list
Search by city, code or province. For sea freight use the UN/LOCODE (country code CN plus a three-letter location code, or HK for Hong Kong). For air freight use the IATA airport code. Put the same code in your ERP supplier ship-from field, the Incoterms named place and the forwarder booking, so that your tracking and landed cost reports can group shipments by gateway. Export the filtered rows to Excel to load into a port master or a drop-down list in your purchasing template.
Why the named place matters
An Incoterms rule such as FOB or CIF needs a named port, for example FOB Ningbo or CIF Los Angeles. Writing only China leaves the place of delivery and the point where risk passes undefined. Where a factory is inland, the named place may be a factory (EXW), a rail terminal or an inland river port. Using the code alongside the name avoids ambiguity between similarly named locations and helps customs brokers match documents.
- Name the exact port or terminal, not the country
- Match the code in PO, invoice, packing list and B/L
- For Shenzhen, specify Yantian, Shekou or another terminal
- Check whether the supplier ships via Hong Kong, a separate customs territory
Common mistakes
The most frequent errors are using Shenzhen where the booking is really for a specific terminal, treating Hong Kong as mainland China in customs documents, and mixing seaport codes with airport codes in the same field. Also, some systems use CNTSN while others use CNXGG for Tianjin, so keep one convention and map the other in your master data. Landed cost and lead time vary by gateway, so record the gateway on each PO.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the UN/LOCODE for Shanghai port?
The UN/LOCODE for Shanghai is CNSHA. Terminals such as Yangshan are usually handled within that code by your forwarder, so confirm the terminal separately when booking and on the bill of lading.
Is Hong Kong part of China for customs?
Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region and a separate customs territory. Goods moving between Hong Kong and the mainland are treated as imports or exports in many cases, so documents and duties differ. Use HKHKG, not a CN code, for Hong Kong.
Should I use UN/LOCODE or IATA for air freight?
For air freight, IATA airport codes such as PVG or SZX are standard on air waybills and bookings. UN/LOCODE can describe the city, but the airport code is what carriers and handlers use to route cargo.
Does this list cover every Chinese port?
No. It covers major gateways and some inland river ports and cargo airports. Use the official UN/LOCODE database or your forwarder for smaller ports, and confirm that the chosen port can handle your cargo type.
If your ERP lets users free-type ports and places, Netray can help set up master data validation and a private assistant that flags inconsistent shipping data in open orders.
