Forklift Daily Inspection Checklist Spanish and English (Checklist Diario de Montacargas)

This forklift daily inspection checklist is written in English and Spanish on every line, so mixed crews can use the same sheet (checklist diario de montacargas). It follows the pre-use examination OSHA expects for powered industrial trucks, and can be printed, ticked and filed, or exported for your records.

OSHA's powered industrial truck standard (29 CFR 1910.178) requires trucks to be examined before being placed in service, at least daily, and after each shift when used around the clock. Trucks found unsafe must be taken out of service until repaired. Operator training must be in a form and language operators understand. Use this as an aid and follow your own site procedure and manufacturer manual. / La norma OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 exige revisar los montacargas antes de ponerlos en servicio, al menos diariamente. Use esta lista como guia y siga el manual del fabricante.

Inspection defects to work orders

How to use the bilingual checklist

Print one sheet per truck per shift, or use it on a tablet. The operator walks around the truck first, then sits in the seat and checks controls with the engine on. Anything marked critical that fails means the truck is tagged out and reported, not used with a note. Write the truck ID and hour meter at the top, so defects can be traced. Keep the English and Spanish text together so supervisors and operators can check each other's reading.

  • Inspect before first use each shift, not before first break
  • Tag out unsafe trucks and keep the key
  • Retain completed sheets per your site policy

What OSHA requires

OSHA's powered industrial truck rule, 29 CFR 1910.178, requires an examination before a truck is placed in service, at least daily, and after each shift if used around the clock. Trucks with conditions that adversely affect safety must be taken out of service until repaired. Repairs must be made by authorised personnel. The rule also says training must be understood by the operator, which is a strong reason to provide a Spanish version for Spanish-speaking crews. The standard does not prescribe a single form, so your checklist should match the truck type and manufacturer guidance.

Truck types and attachments

Power source changes the checks. Electric trucks need battery, cable and restraint checks. LPG trucks need tank mounting and leak checks. Diesel and gasoline units need fluid levels. Attachments such as clamps, rotators and side shifters need their own function test and a capacity plate that reflects the attachment. If you run several truck types, keep one checklist per class so operators do not skip lines that do not apply.

Common mistakes

The usual problems are pencil-whipping a sheet without actually checking, no tag-out discipline when a defect is found, no closed-loop with maintenance, and sheets that are filled in once the shift is over. Another is leaving Spanish-speaking operators with an English-only form. Review a sample of completed sheets weekly, compare against maintenance work orders, and look for patterns such as repeated horn or brake defects on one unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often must a forklift be inspected?

Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178, powered industrial trucks must be examined before being placed in service, at least daily. If a truck is used on a round-the-clock basis, it must be examined after each shift. Unsafe trucks must be removed from service until repaired.

Is there an official Spanish forklift checklist?

OSHA does not publish one mandatory form. Employers create their own checklist. A bilingual version helps ensure operators understand each item, which supports the requirement that training and instructions are understood by the operator.

Who should keep the completed checklists?

The employer, typically through the safety or maintenance department. OSHA does not set a single retention period for daily sheets in this standard, so follow your site policy, insurer requirements and any customer or state rules, and keep them long enough to trace repeated defects.

If your inspection sheets live on paper, Netray can help turn them into maintenance work orders in your ERP or CMMS and put a private AI layer on top so supervisors can ask which trucks keep failing, hosted on your own servers.
