Clause numbers follow IATF 16949:2016. This list covers selected automotive-specific clauses and is not exhaustive. Use the standard and your certification body's rules for audits.

Automate IATF audit evidence

An optional look at pulling traceability and calibration records from your ERP for audits.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use the reference

Search by clause number or by keyword such as control plan, MSA or audit. Use the evidence column as a starting point for your audit trail or internal audit checklist, then confirm the details against the standard. The Excel export gives you a base for an audit planner where you can add owner, last review date and findings.

Structure of the standard

IATF 16949 follows the ISO 9001:2015 clause structure from 4 to 10 and inserts automotive-specific sub-clauses with extra numbering, for example 7.1.5.1.1 under 7.1.5.1. Those sub-clauses are where certification bodies and customers look for tools such as MSA, control plans and layout inspection. The standard is used together with applicable customer-specific requirements.

Clauses auditors dig into

Experience shows scrutiny on special characteristics (8.3.3.3), control plans (8.5.1.1), change control (8.5.6.1) and problem solving (10.2.3). A consistent thread from the special characteristics list to the PFMEA, control plan and work instruction is a typical trace auditors follow. Gaps in that thread often become nonconformities.

Common mistakes

Teams sometimes treat IATF 16949 as a document set rather than a process system, so records exist but are not used. Another gap is ignoring customer-specific requirements, which are auditable alongside the standard. Keep a living matrix of those requirements per customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IATF 16949 a standalone standard?

It is published to be used together with ISO 9001 clauses, with the automotive-specific text added as supplements. Certification is issued by IATF-recognised certification bodies, and customer-specific requirements apply in addition.

Where is the control plan requirement?

Clause 8.5.1.1 covers the control plan. It expects plans at relevant phases, such as prototype, pre-launch and production, covering the process steps from receiving to shipping and tied to special characteristics and FMEA.

Which clause covers MSA?

Clause 7.1.5.1.1 requires statistical studies to analyse variation in each measurement and test system listed in the control plan. The AIAG MSA manual is the common method reference unless the customer says otherwise.

Does this list replace the standard?

No. It is a navigation aid listing selected clauses. For audits, always use the current standard, the IATF rules and your customers' requirements.
