IATF 16949 Internal Audit Checklist
IATF 16949 internal audits must cover the QMS, each manufacturing process and the product over a planned programme. This checklist gives auditors a clause by clause prompt list, with critical items flagged so evidence is verified first.
0 of 39 items complete
12 critical items still open - these are the highest-risk gaps.
Clause 4 and 5: Context and leadership
Clause 6: Planning
Clause 7: Support
Clause 8: Operation
Clause 9: Performance evaluation
Clause 10: Improvement
Tick each item that you verified with objective evidence. Critical items should be fully verified before the audit is considered passed. This checklist is a prompt list, not a substitute for the standard or your certification body's rules.

How to use the checklist
Pick the process or area you are auditing, then work through the groups that apply. For each item, sample records and ask the process owner to show evidence, rather than accepting a verbal answer. Tick items verified, leave gaps unticked and record findings in your audit report. The checklist is organized by clause, but the programme should follow processes, so combine clause groups when you audit one area end to end.
Three kinds of audit
IATF 16949 expects QMS audits, manufacturing process audits and product audits. A QMS audit tests the whole system against the standard and customer requirements. A manufacturing process audit tests whether the process is controlled as the control plan, work instructions and PFMEA describe, on all shifts. A product audit checks finished product against specifications at suitable stages. Use this checklist mainly for the QMS audit and adapt items for the other two.
- QMS audit: whole system against the standard
- Process audit: control plan and instructions on the floor
- Product audit: product against requirements
- Cover all shifts and all customer specific requirements
Reading your score
A high tick rate does not mean readiness if critical items are open. Treat every unticked critical item as a likely nonconformity and plan corrective action with owners and dates. Items you could not verify count as gaps, because a certification auditor will ask for the same evidence. Re-audit gaps and keep records of the previous cycle so you can show closure.
Common mistakes
Auditing only to the standard and missing customer specific requirements, auditing a single shift, using auditors who audit their own work, and writing findings as vague observations with no objective evidence. Update the programme using customer complaints and risk, not only a fixed calendar.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often must IATF 16949 internal audits be done?
The programme must cover the whole QMS, all manufacturing processes and products, based on risk, performance and past audit results. A full cycle each year is common for QMS audits, but process audits run more often where risk is higher. Your certification body checks the programme logic.
Who can be an internal auditor?
Internal auditors must be competent under documented criteria, which include knowledge of the standard, customer specific requirements, core tools and auditing skills. They should be independent of the area audited, which usually means someone outside that process.
What are the core tools in IATF 16949?
The core tools are APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC. Auditors should check that the organization applies them correctly and that their outputs, such as control plans and capability studies, stay consistent with each other.
Does this checklist replace the standard?
No. It is a prompt list organized by clause and does not reproduce the standard. Always audit against the current published IATF 16949 text, the applicable sanctioned interpretations and the customer specific requirements for your site.
