Infor Lawson LSF System Utilities and Batch Command Reference

A searchable list of the Lawson System Foundation (LSF 9.x to 10.x) command-line utilities that S3 admins use for the batch server, job queues and data copies. Each row gives the purpose from the Infor System Utilities Reference, a typical command, where to run it and what to watch.

lajs
Lawson Batch Server: manages all batch programs; reads lajs.cfg when it starts
Not run by hand; controlled with startlajs, stoplajs and jqcontrol
LSF server, Lawson environment
Edit lajs.cfg only with a backup; changes are read at start

startlajs
LSF server, Lawson admin user
Completion messages for steps that finished during the stop are sent after restart

Controlled stop of the Lawson Batch Server
stoplajs
LSF server, Lawson admin user
Waiting jobs stay waiting; an active job step runs to completion first
startjobqueue / stopjobqueue
Start / Stop Lawson Job Queue (System Utilities Reference)
startjobqueue
LSF server
Check jqstatus before and after
jqcontrol
Job Queue Control: reports batch server settings and performance and changes server parameters without stoplajs / startlajs
jqcontrol (see guide for options on your OS)

jqsubmit (job name and user per guide)
LSF server
Job must already be defined
jobdef
Job Definition
jobdef
LSF server
Jobs belong to a user; changing another user's job needs rights

recdef / recrpt
Recurring Job Definition / Recurring Job Listing
recrpt to review, recdef to change
LSF server
Review recurring jobs after a clone so test does not run production schedules
dbdump
Dump Database File to standard output or a file
dbdump -d -iGLMSET1 dataarea GLMASTER > glmaster.dmp
LSF server
Without -d, fields wider than 80 columns are truncated
dbload
Load a database file from a dbdump flat file
dbload -f dataarea GLMASTER glmaster.dmp
LSF server, target data area
-a overwrites duplicates, -n keeps existing, -r reports; check the guide for the -f option on your database type. Not for non-Lawson data
rngdbdump
Dump a range of records from one file, optionally as CSV or dbload format
rngdbdump -c -iGLMSET2 dataarea GLMASTER -k 100
LSF server
-c CSV, -d dbload format, -n no headers, -f field list, -k key values, -z writes a log under LAWDIR/system/joblog
importdb
Import Comma-Delimited File into a Lawson database file
importdb with a CSV created by rngdbdump -c (options per guide)
LSF server, target data area
Test on a copy; CSV column order must match the file definition
dbcopy
Database Copy: copies data from one data area to another
dbcopy (see guide)
LSF server
Overwrites target data; confirm the target data area twice
sqldbcopy
Copy a database file between data areas using SQL
sqldbcopy (see guide)
LSF server
Both data areas must be on reachable SQL databases
expsysdb / impexp
Export System Data / Import an Export File, including attachment files
expsysdb in source, impexp in target
LSF server, both product lines
Use these, not dbdump, when attachments (L_H / L_D files) must move too
count
Count Records in Table
count (see guide for arguments)
LSF server
Quick check before and after a load
dbdef
Database Definition
dbdef
LSF server, developer or admin
Definition changes need a database reorganisation
blddbdict

blddbdict
LSF server, admin
Run in a maintenance window
dbusers
View Database Processes
dbusers
LSF server
Check before stopping servers or reorganising
startlaw / stoplaw

tmmon / tmcontrol
Transaction Manager Monitor / Transaction Monitor Control
tmmon
LSF server
Watch online transaction load before restarting latm
licsta
License Status
licsta
LSF server
Read-only
lashow
Display File
lashow on a job log or print file
LSF server
Read-only

Names and one-line purposes follow the LSF 10.0 System Utilities Reference index. Options are shown only where the guide documents them; for others, check the guide for your platform (UNIX, Windows, IBM i). 'dataarea' and file names are placeholders.

Get a Lawson admin runbook

Tell us your LSF version and platform and we will turn this list into a checked runbook for batch recovery and data copies on your servers.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use this reference

Search by command or by task word such as 'queue', 'dump' or 'copy'. Commands run in a Lawson environment shell on the LSF server, as a user with the Lawson environment variables set (LAWDIR, GENDIR and the product line variables). Most job and queue utilities read the GEN data area; data utilities take a data area (product line) and a file name such as GLMASTER. Export the table to Excel to build a runbook for your own servers, adding your real data area names and paths.

  • Batch: lajs, startlajs, stoplajs, jqcontrol, jqstatus, jqrpt
  • Jobs: jobdef, jobdump, jobload, jobrpt, recdef
  • Data: dbdump, dbload, rngdbdump, importdb, dbcopy, expsysdb, impexp

Batch troubleshooting flow

When users report a job stuck in 'waiting', start with jqstatus to see whether the batch server and queue are active. If the queue is held or the server is down, check lajs.cfg and restart with stoplajs and startlajs; stopping is controlled, so an active step finishes first. If the server is fine, look at the job itself with jobstatus and the job log (job logs sit under LAWDIR/system/joblog for utilities that log, such as rngdbdump -z). Use jqcontrol to inspect settings or adjust batch server parameters without a restart. Only delete history with deljobhst once audit needs are clear.

Copying data safely between product lines

For one file, dbdump -d writes a flat file that dbload can read; check the dbload options for your database type before loading. For a subset, rngdbdump selects by key (-k) or field value and can write CSV (-c) for importdb or dbload format (-d). For whole product lines, or when attachments must travel, use expsysdb and impexp, because attachment headers and details live in separate L_H and L_D files that a plain dbdump misses. Always count records before and after, run against a test data area first, and keep the dump file until users sign off. dbload is not meant for importing data from non-Lawson systems.

Gotchas

Utilities behave slightly differently on UNIX, Windows and IBM i, so read the guide for your platform before scripting. Fields wider than 80 columns are truncated by dbdump and rngdbdump unless you use -d or -c. After cloning production to test, review recurring jobs (recrpt) before starting the batch server, or test will run production schedules and send real emails. GEN tables such as USERINFO can be dumped with rngdbdump against the gen data area, but treat GEN as system data: never load into it without Infor guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I get Infor Lawson support for these utilities?

The authoritative source is the Infor Lawson System Utilities Reference Guide for your LSF version on docs.infor.com, plus Infor Support (Concierge) for cases. Community forums such as LawsonGuru are useful for examples, but confirm options in the guide for your platform.

What is the Lawson batch server called?

The Lawson Batch Server process is lajs. It reads lajs.cfg on start, manages all batch programs, and is stopped and started with stoplajs and startlajs. jqcontrol reports its settings and can change parameters without a restart.

How do I export a Lawson table to CSV?

Use rngdbdump with -c, giving the data area and file name, and optionally -f for a field list and -k for key values. Redirect output to a file. The CSV can be loaded into another data area with importdb.

Does the Infor Lawson installation guide cover these commands?

Installation guides reference them during setup, but full syntax is in the System Utilities Reference. Data transfer chapters in the administration guides explain when to use dbdump and dbload versus expsysdb and impexp, and when importdb is the right tool for CSV data.

If your team wants to ask about Lawson job failures and batch history in plain English on your own servers, we can set up a read-only assistant over GEN and job logs.
