Measurement System and Calibration Maturity Assessment
This ten-question assessment scores how well your measurement system is controlled, from the gage list to MSA to the way you handle out-of-tolerance findings. It takes about five minutes and gives you a band and a short action list.
1. How is your gage and instrument master list maintained?
2. How do you know which gages are due for calibration?
3. What data do calibration certificates give you?
4. How do you set calibration intervals?
5. What happens when a gage is found out of tolerance?
6. How are MSA studies managed?
7. How do you evaluate attribute inspection (go/no-go, visual)?
8. How is measurement uncertainty handled in your calibration decisions?
9. How are gages handled and stored?
10. How do you review calibration performance?
How to use it
Answer based on what actually happens today, not what the procedure says. Where practice differs between sites, choose the weaker answer. The score is converted to a percentage of the maximum and mapped to one of four bands. Export the result and use it to prioritise a gap closure plan or to brief management ahead of an audit.
What the questions test
The questions follow the lifecycle of a gage: identification, scheduling, calibration data, intervals, failure handling, studies, uncertainty, storage and review. They reflect expectations common to ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949 and ISO/IEC 17025 without quoting them. A weak score on one area, such as out-of-tolerance handling, can be more serious than a moderate score overall.
Reading the bands
Reactive and Basic control programs benefit most from a master list, due-date visibility and written procedures. Managed programs gain from integration with control plans and shop floor systems. Optimised programs should concentrate on drift analytics and testing the recall process. Use the recommendation lists as a starting point and set owners and dates.
Limits of a self-assessment
A self-assessment reflects the opinion of whoever answers. For best results, have a second person, such as an auditor or the calibration technician, answer independently and compare. It does not replace an audit against the standard or customer requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an official maturity model?
No. It is a practical self-assessment built around common expectations for gage and calibration control. It is not issued by a standards body, and it does not certify anything.
Who should fill it in?
The person who runs the calibration program, ideally with a quality engineer and someone from production. Differences in answers are useful in themselves.
How often should I repeat it?
Once a year or after a major change such as a new site, a new ERP or a change of calibration provider. Compare the scores to see whether actions have worked.
What score is good enough?
That depends on your customers and risk. For aerospace, defense or automotive suppliers, aim for the Managed band or higher, with all out-of-tolerance and traceability questions at the top answers.
If the assessment shows gaps in how calibration data is stored or surfaced, we can look at how your ERP and quality systems could be connected.
