SAP Document Types Reference: SA, KR, DR, WE, RE and More

A document type in SAP classifies every accounting document, controls which account types it may touch and which number range it takes. Support teams meet them in every FBL1N or FB03 screen, usually as two letters nobody explained. This reference lists the standard types with their usual origin.

Document types are configuration (OB41, table T003), so your system may differ. Names can be changed and new types added. Treat this as the delivered default and check T003 in your own client.

Document type usage report

Optional: have us count postings by document type across your company codes using a read-only extract.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use this lookup

Type a document type, such as KZ, or a process word, such as depreciation, to filter the list. Use it when you read an FB03 or FBL3N display, when you build a report filter, or when you document which types your company uses in a design blueprint. Export the filtered list to Excel to paste into a functional spec.

What a document type controls

In OB41 a document type sets the number range, the allowed account types (A for assets, D for customers, K for vendors, M for materials, S for G/L), whether a reference number is mandatory, whether net posting applies and whether it can be used for reverse postings. The number range per type often differs per company code or fiscal year, which is why gaps in numbering can appear. Table T003 holds the definitions.

Reading the prefixes

Types starting with K are vendor-related, D customer-related, W goods movements, R logistics invoice or billing, and A asset-related. This is a convention, not a rule, and custom types are often named by country or by process, such as ZR for a manual reclass. When you see a type you do not recognise, look it up in T003 first, then check the number range in OBA7.

Common mistakes

Assuming a standard meaning for a type that has been repurposed. Filtering reports on SA only and missing manual postings of other types. Using a document type with the wrong allowed account types, which gives a posting error. Changing a number range after documents are posted. Choosing the same type for payments and invoices so the aging report mixes them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between KR and RE?

KR is a vendor invoice entered directly in financial accounting. RE is an invoice posted through logistics invoice verification (MIRO) against a purchase order, which can also update inventory, GR/IR and tax.

Where do I create or change a document type?

Use transaction OB41 or the IMG path Financial Accounting, General Ledger Accounting, Business Transactions, Document Header. Definitions are stored in table T003 and are client dependent.

Why do some documents have type WE and others WA?

WE is for goods receipts, which increase stock, and WA is for goods issues, which decrease stock. The movement type determines which one is used, along with the configuration for the movement type and the company code.

Can I filter an FI report by document type?

Yes. Most line item reports such as FBL1N, FBL3N and FBL5N offer document type as a selection criterion, and a range of types can be entered to separate invoices, payments and logistics postings.

If you need a cleaned-up view of which document types are actually in use in your company codes, Netray can query your SAP data read-only and report counts and values.
