SAP Cost Element Categories Reference: Every Category and What It Is For

The cost element category tells SAP Controlling what kind of cost flow a cost element represents. Choosing it wrongly blocks postings, such as an allocation that will not accept a secondary element. This reference lists the standard categories, the S/4HANA account types that replaced separate cost element master data, and the transactions and tables that carry them.

43
Cost element category
Internal activity allocation
Allocation of activity quantity times activity type price, for example machine or labor hours.
P
S/4HANA account type
Primary costs or revenue
G/L account that is also a primary cost element. Created in FS00 with the cost element category.

S/4HANA account type
Secondary costs
G/L account that acts as a secondary cost element for allocations and settlement. Created in KA06 or FS00.

S/4HANA account type
Nonoperating expense or income
P&L account that is not a cost element, such as interest or other financial items.
X
S/4HANA account type
Balance sheet account
Balance sheet G/L account. Never a cost element.
KA01
Transaction (ECC)
Create primary cost element
ECC master data. In S/4HANA primary cost elements are created as G/L accounts instead.
KA06
Transaction
Create secondary cost element
Used to create the elements for assessment, distribution, activity allocation and settlement.
KA03
Transaction (ECC)
Display cost element
Shows category, validity dates and attributes such as unit of measure.
CSKA
Table (ECC)
Cost element master data by chart of accounts
Joins to CSKB for the controlling-area data, including the category field KATYP.
CSKB
Table
Cost elements data per controlling area
Holds validity period and category (KATYP) per controlling area.
CSKU
Table
Cost element texts
Names and descriptions per language.

Category numbers are those delivered in standard SAP. Your system may restrict which categories are available for a given account type. Confirm in KA03 or table CSKB (field KATYP) before relying on a value.

Chart of accounts and cost element review

Optional: send us an export of your cost elements and we will flag categories that look inconsistent with how they are posted.

Optional. The tool and every export work without this. No spam.

How to use this lookup

Type a category number, a transaction or a keyword like settlement into the search box and the table filters live. Use it when creating a new secondary element for an assessment cycle, when a CO posting is rejected with a message about the cost element category, or when you document a chart of accounts design for a project. The result can be exported to Excel or PDF so the same list can sit in your blueprint document.

  • Search by number, for example 43
  • Search by process word, for example assessment or settlement
  • Export the filtered view for your design document

Primary versus secondary elements

Primary cost elements, category 1 for costs and 11 or 12 for revenue, exist as G/L accounts and are created by FI or MM postings. Secondary elements, categories 21, 22, 31, 41, 42 and 43, exist only in CO and carry internal flows. In ECC they are separate master data in KA01 and KA06. In S/4HANA they are G/L accounts with account type P or S, which is why the reconciliation between FI and CO is now automatic in the Universal Journal table ACDOCA.

Choosing a category in practice

Match the category to the CO function that will post it. Assessment cycles need category 42, activity allocation from cost center to production order needs 43, and order settlement needs 21 or 22 depending on the receiver. A common design is one assessment element per business purpose so cost center reports show clearly where an allocation came from. Avoid using one element for several cycles.

Common mistakes

Using category 1 for something that should be an allocation, so reports mix real expense with internal charge. Creating too many assessment elements and losing the report overview. Forgetting validity dates, so a new element cannot be posted in the current period. In S/4HANA, setting account type N on a P&L account that should have been a cost element, then wondering why cost center postings fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between category 42 and 43?

Category 42 is assessment, which moves cost with a fixed percentage or fixed amount across senders and receivers. Category 43 is internal activity allocation, which moves quantity multiplied by an activity type price, such as machine hours times a rate.

Are cost elements still separate objects in S/4HANA?

No. In S/4HANA the cost element is a G/L account with an account type of P or S, plus a cost element category. Master data is maintained in FS00 or in the Fiori app for G/L accounts, with KA06 still available for secondary ones.

Can I change a category after postings exist?

Generally not. SAP restricts changing the category once the element has been used. The usual approach is to create a new element with a new validity period or number and stop using the old one.

Which category do I use for freight surcharges added by a costing sheet?

Overhead applied through a costing sheet uses category 41. The credit side of the overhead is posted to a separate element so the original cost stays visible.

If you want these checks run against your own chart of accounts, such as finding secondary elements with the wrong category, Netray can set up a read-only query over your SAP data.
