SyteLine quality + AI

AI for SyteLine Quality: Nonconformance Reports and Inspection Data

Short answer

AI for SyteLine quality reads nonconformance, inspection and receiving data so quality engineers can ask which defects repeat, which suppliers drive rejects and which open NCRs are aging. It drafts summaries and disposition suggestions for review; the formal disposition and CAPA approval remain human decisions in your quality process.

In many SyteLine plants quality data is split. Inspection results and NCR records sit in the ERP or its quality module, while corrective action tracking, calibration and document control live in a separate QMS or in spreadsheets. The ERP side holds the part numbers, jobs, vendors and lots, which is exactly the context a quality engineer needs.

The recurring job is pattern finding: the same defect on the same operation, the same supplier lot failing again, a work center that generates more rework than its neighbours. These patterns are in the data but they take hours to extract, so reviews often rely on memory and the most recent incident.

NCR text is another problem. Descriptions are free text typed under pressure, with inconsistent defect wording. Counting them by category requires reading them, which is work a language model does well when grounded and checked.

This page describes what AI can reasonably do with SyteLine quality data, what it must not do in a regulated setting, and how to keep an audit trail that an AS9100, ISO 9001 or IATF auditor will accept.

What usually gets in the way

The problems we hear most from quality manager teams running Infor SyteLine.

Defect wording is inconsistent

The same failure is described five ways across NCRs, so Pareto charts built on free text undercount the real top causes.

Supplier issues surface late

Receiving rejects and in-process failures traced to a vendor lot are not linked in one view, so supplier corrective action requests start after repeat problems.

Aging NCRs hide in the list

Open NCRs without a disposition or owner age quietly, and the reports that show them are run only before audits.

Cost of quality is estimated

Scrap, rework and return costs are in different transactions, so the real cost of a defect is rarely stated.

Traceability queries are slow

When a lot is suspect, finding every job and shipment it touched takes manual lot and serial tracing.

Where AI earns its place in Infor SyteLine

Each use case names the ERP objects it reads or writes, so your ERP team can judge the integration effort before anyone commits budget.

NCR trend and Pareto

Classify free-text NCR descriptions into your defect codes, show the proposed class and let a quality engineer confirm before it enters reporting.

Touches: NCR records, item, job, vendor

Outcome: More reliable Pareto data with a human check on the classification.

Supplier reject analysis

Join receiving inspection rejects with in-process NCRs by vendor and lot to show repeat issues.

Touches: po receipts, inspection results, vendor, lot records

Outcome: Earlier supplier corrective action.

Aging NCR watch

List open NCRs by age, owner and affected job value, and draft a reminder for each owner.

Touches: NCR status fields, job, item cost

Outcome: Fewer NCRs stuck without disposition.

Disposition suggestion

Show how similar past NCRs on the same item were dispositioned (use as is, rework, scrap, return) with costs, as input to the review board.

Touches: NCR history, material transactions

Outcome: More consistent decisions; the board still decides.

Lot traceability query

Given a lot number, list the jobs, customer orders and shipments that consumed it.

Touches: lot, matltran, job material, shipment records

Outcome: Containment scope in minutes instead of hours.

Cost of poor quality summary

Combine scrap, rework labor and return transactions per item or work center.

Touches: scrap and rework transactions, labor, returns

Outcome: A defensible cost number for management review.

Audit preparation

Assemble NCR closure evidence and aging lists for an auditor's sample request.

Touches: NCR, inspection and job records

Outcome: Less manual compilation before audits.

Reference architecture

The AI layer sits beside SyteLine and any separate QMS, reading quality, receiving and lot data. It classifies and summarises, shows its sources, and writes nothing to the quality record without a named reviewer approving it.

  1. 1

    Data access

Read-only access to NCR, inspection, receipt, lot and job tables, plus an export from the QMS if CAPA lives elsewhere.

  2. 2

    Defect taxonomy

Your defect codes and cause categories supplied as the controlled vocabulary for classification.

  3. 3

    Private model

An open-weight model on local GPUs for classification and summarising, never sending quality records off site.

  4. 4

    Review queue

Suggested classifications and dispositions queue for a quality engineer to accept or edit.

  5. 5

    Audit log

Each suggestion, reviewer, edit and timestamp is recorded for traceability.

Integration notes for your ERP team

  • Confirm where NCR records live: SyteLine quality forms, user-defined tables or an external QMS.
  • Preserve original text; store AI classes as separate fields marked as suggested.
  • Lot and serial tracing depends on how consistently lots are recorded at receipt and issue.
  • Link NCRs to job, operation and vendor, or analysis stays at part level only.
  • Validate any model used in a regulated quality workflow according to your own procedures.

Deployment options

On-prem

Plants under customer or regulatory data restrictions

All classification and storage inside the plant network.

Private cloud

Groups sharing a quality function across plants

Single deployment with per-site access control.

Air-gapped

Defense and aerospace programs

Isolated environment with controlled updates.

Compliance and data control

How the architecture supports your obligations. Certification and accountability stay with your organisation; the design keeps the evidence straightforward.

AS9100 and ISO 9001

Nonconformance control and records stay in your system; AI suggestions are reviewed and logged, supporting rather than replacing the process.

FDA 21 CFR 820 / QMSR and ISO 13485

For medical device work, suggestions never alter the device history record. Your validation approach for any software used in the quality system still applies.

IATF 16949

Supplier and containment analysis supports customer reporting; formal responses stay with the quality team.

Data integrity

Original NCR text is retained untouched; AI classifications are stored as separate, attributable fields.

Questions to ask any vendor, including us

A short list that separates real Infor SyteLine AI work from a chatbot demo.

  1. Where is the original NCR text kept and can it be altered?
  2. Who approves an AI suggested classification?
  3. How is accuracy measured against our historical NCRs?
  4. Does the system fit our software validation procedure?
  5. Can it show which records each answer used?
  6. What leaves our network?
  7. How are changes to the defect taxonomy handled?

Frequently asked questions

Can AI disposition an NCR?

It can suggest, with the history of similar dispositions and costs. The disposition itself, especially use as is or return to supplier, is a quality decision that needs a named, authorised person and should stay that way.

Is this allowed under 21 CFR 820 or ISO 13485?

Using software in the quality system is allowed if you validate it for its intended use. Keeping AI to suggestions with human review and an audit log makes validation simpler. Your regulatory team decides the specific approach.

What accuracy is realistic for NCR classification?

It depends on how clean your taxonomy and past labels are. Measure on a held-out sample of reviewed NCRs before going live, and keep a human review step for anything below a threshold you set.

Does it need a separate QMS?

No. It works with whatever holds the data. If CAPA lives in a separate QMS, an export or API read makes it available for joint analysis.

How does lot traceability work?

It follows lot records through material transactions to jobs and shipments. Gaps in lot recording at receipt or issue limit it, and the answer should say where the chain breaks.

Can it work offline?

Yes. With open-weight models on local hardware, no internet connection is required after setup.

Will auditors accept it?

Auditors look for control, records and evidence of review. A logged, human-reviewed suggestion workflow with unaltered originals is easier to defend than ad hoc spreadsheets.
