Short answer
In SAP S/4HANA you create a material with MM01 or the Fiori app Manage Product Master. Choose the industry sector and material type, select the views you need, and fill the organizational levels. For a manufactured part, the minimum is Basic Data, MRP 1 to 3, Work Scheduling, Accounting and Costing, plus Purchasing for bought items.
Applies to: SAP S/4HANA on-premise; MM01 remains available. SAP calls the object 'product' in Fiori; the technical object is still the material master
How to create a manufacturing material
- 1Run MM01, or open Manage Product Master and choose Create. Enter the material number (or leave blank for internal numbering), industry sector and material type.
- 2Select views. For a manufactured item choose Basic Data 1, Basic Data 2, MRP 1, MRP 2, MRP 3, Work Scheduling, Accounting 1, Costing 1 and Costing 2, plus Storage and Quality views if used.
- 3Enter organizational levels: plant, storage location and, for sales or purchasing views, the sales area or purchasing organization.
- 4Basic Data: description, base unit of measure, material group, division. Add weight and dimensions if logistics needs them.
- 5MRP views: MRP type, MRP controller, lot-sizing procedure, procurement type (E in-house, F external, X both), planned delivery time and in-house production time, and safety stock.
- 6Work Scheduling: production scheduler, scheduling profile and over/underdelivery tolerance. Accounting: valuation class, price control (S standard or V moving average) and the price.
- 7Save, then check the result in MM03 and MMBE, and run MRP for the material to prove planning parameters work.
Choosing material type and views
The material type (set up in OMS2) controls which views are offered, the number range, price control default and whether the material is quantity or value updated. Typical types are ROH for raw material, HALB for semi-finished, FERT for finished product, and HIBE for operating supplies.
A view exists only once it is created for an organizational level. A material used in two plants needs plant-level views, such as MRP and Accounting, for each plant. That is why extending a material to a new plant is a routine task, and why missing views create errors in MRP, production orders or POs.
What S/4HANA changes
The material number can be up to 40 characters. Many companies keep their old 18-character scheme and just gain headroom.
Material Ledger is active and mandatory, which affects valuation and the Costing views. Check the actual costing and price determination settings with finance before you load many materials.
The Business Partner approach affects vendors and customers rather than materials, but the supplier or customer fields on the material master still point to those records. Fiori apps give a simpler interface and can be configured per role, but MM01 still offers all views.
Bulk and quality control
For many materials use a migration approach such as the SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit, LSMW or a BAPI like BAPI_MATERIAL_SAVEDATA, rather than manual entry. Test with a small set and compare MM03 output against the source.
Governance matters: master data created without rules ends with duplicates. Use an approval workflow or at least a duplicate check by description and key attributes.

Common pitfalls
- !Missing MRP or Work Scheduling views, so MRP skips the material or production orders cannot be created.
- !Using standard price for a part whose cost changes often without a revaluation plan.
- !Wrong procurement type, which makes MRP create planned orders instead of purchase requisitions.
- !Creating a material in one plant and forgetting to extend it to the others.
- !Loading materials in bulk without a duplicate check.
How an ERP-grounded AI assistant handles this
Master data owners often want to find incomplete or inconsistent materials before planning runs. Netray's ERPray can run this kind of lookup in plain language against your own SAP system, read-only by default, showing the query it ran and respecting SAP authorizations, with the model served on your own hardware when the system is on-prem. It explains and finds the data; it does not replace configuration decisions or post documents without human approval.
Frequently asked questions
Is MM01 still available in S/4HANA?
Yes, MM01 still works in S/4HANA on-premise. SAP also provides the Fiori app Manage Product Master as the newer interface, but both write to the same material master data.
Which views does a manufactured material need?
At a minimum Basic Data, MRP 1 to 3, Work Scheduling, Accounting and Costing for the producing plant. Add Storage, Quality and Sales views depending on how the material is used.
What is the difference between ROH, HALB and FERT?
ROH is raw material, HALB is semi-finished product made in-house, and FERT is finished product. The type controls views, number ranges and defaults such as price control.
How do I extend a material to another plant?
Use MM01 with a reference to the existing material, or MM02 to add the views for the new plant. The plant must exist and be assigned to a valuation area first.

SAP MD01N (MRP Live) vs MD01: How to Run MRP Correctly
MD01N is MRP Live: the same planning logic as classic MD01, but executed inside the SAP HANA database instead of looping through materials in ABAP. Run it from MD01N by entering the plant, choosing a processing key (net change or regeneration), setting the purchase requisition and scheduling parameters, and executing in the background for large scopes.
Error fixSAP CO01 Error: No Production Version Found for Material
SAP cannot pick a production version for the order quantity and date, so it cannot determine the BOM and routing. Fix it in C223 or on the MRP 4 view of the material: create a version for the plant, make its validity dates and lot size range cover the order, link a valid BOM alternative and routing, and remove the lock indicator.
Error fixSAP M7 021: Deficit of SL Stock Quantity
M7 021 fires during a goods issue, delivery, or confirmation when SAP checks the unrestricted-use (SL) stock for the exact plant, storage location and batch combination and finds less than what you are trying to post out. Fix the entry (batch, storage location, quantity) first; only enable negative stock or downgrade the message to a warning if the business genuinely needs to post ahead of a receipt.
Error fixSAP IDoc Status 51: Application Document Not Posted
Status 51 tells you the IDoc reached the application layer and failed to post, but the status text itself is not the error - the real cause sits in the status record's long text or the linked application log. Fix the underlying data or configuration, then reprocess the IDoc through BD87 rather than editing the status.
Error fixSAP Short Dump TIME_OUT: Maximum Runtime Exceeded
A TIME_OUT runtime error means a dialog (or RFC) work process ran longer than the maximum allowed runtime, controlled by profile parameter rdisp/max_wprun_time (600 seconds by default). The fix is almost always to move the long-running work to background processing or tune the underlying program, not to raise the timeout.
How-toHow to Read MD04 Exception Messages in SAP
The exception indicator in MD04 flags procurement elements whose date or quantity no longer matches the current demand situation - it is SAP's built-in change signal, read element by element in the detail screen, not just the header icon. Triage by exception group first, then decide to reschedule, cancel, or accept each one.
